Brief Description: Also known as el barrya [ ]in Hassaniyya, it is a small perennial bush that averages 20 to 40 centimeters in height. It is present in southern Morocco and Western Sahara, generally along the coast and in soils rich in salt. Domestic animals do not eat it. Local communities in the Western Sahara collect the aerial parts, crush them, heat then and use them for treating rheumatism, sore knees, varicose veins and skin infections in general. In Spanish, the species is called uva de mar, grape of the sea as it tends to turn purple in color by the end of the dry season.
