French music is characterized by the importance given to lyrics. Whether it is French variety, rap or rock, the texts are usually very rich. It may be poetic texts* committed songs, sarcastic onesor simply talking about life and of course love songs. Nonetheless, some artists produce also lighter works.

A TRESURE IN DANGER

In fact, since 1900, 50% of wetlands have been lost ; yet, it is in the rainforests that host 50% of the fauna and ora of the world, which gives an idea of the magnitude of the disaster. Moreover, in the world, every minute, 28 acres of forests are razed.

As this quarters focus is dedicated to music, I would also like to introduce a song involved for the environment, and thought-provoking: "Respire" performed by Mickey 3D. Enjoy !

Whether traveling/living abroad or observing immigrants/foreigners on vacation, who has never been confronted to a behavior they do not understand ? This apparently ordinary situation is actually crucial to the "living together". Indeed, what should we do, in a situation that we do not understand ? Unfortunately, in this case, even for very mundane things, rejection is a very common feeling. The temptation to consider the ununderstood behavior as absurd or bad is indeed very strong. Why ? Just because our look on the others cultural practices is necessarily subjective, because it is subject to our own cultural references. Think about it and try to understand the meaning of the behavior in question. If it is not possible, lets at least try not to consider our cultural framework as the only one to be good and lets try to be tolerant.

WHAT DOES THAT MEAN ?

T h e ex p re s s i o n " avo i r l a pche" (Yes ! The fruit !!!) simply means "to be in good shape". Its also possible to say "avoir la patate" (starch) and the meaning will be the same, such as "avoir la frite".
WHY THIS EXPRESSION ?

"Compter pour des prunes" : "count for nothing". This one as the same meaning as "compter pour du beurre et du fromage". The rst one is more used by people, while the second, which is furthermore rather used by children, is typically used for actions. A vegetable ? Carot, for example. " L e s carottes sont cuites" : "There is no more hope ". "Les boeufs carottes" is an expresion meaning "general services inspection" (cops investigating on cops). And of course... Bread ! "Avoir du pain sur la planche" : "To have work to do". "Se vendre comme des petits pains" : "easy to sell". "Avoir quelque chose pour une bouche de pain" : "To buy something at low price".

Did you know ? The French word

OTHER EXEMPLES ?

The list is very long! Thus, the phrase "tre une bonne poire " means being too nice. While "en pleine poire" is synonymous of "in my/his/her face". Still about pears, "se fendre la poire " as the meaning of "laughing out loud". Finally, "couper la poire en deux" means " n d a c o m p ro m i s e " , "adopt a medium position". Regarding fruits, apple is not far away. "Tomber dans les pommes" ? "To faint" ! "Haut comme trois pommes" ? " Very short" (for people). "Cest pour ma pomme " "Its happening to me". A last fruit ? The plum ! "Prendre une prune" : "Get a ne ".

Fifty-three days a year, it turns back as an island - during the equinoctial tides - for a few hours. It's very impressive and many tourists come these days to enjoy the beauty of this scene offered by Mother Nature.

ANECDOTE...

During the Middle Age, the Mount Saint-Michel was called "Mount Saint-Michel at the peril of the sea." The name has its origin in the edication, at the request of the Archangel Michael himself, of a shaped cave oratory, by the Bishop of Avranches. There are still remnants of this structure, visible in the nave of the abbey.
