Statement on 2uu9 Nobel Peace Piize Lauieate by Thoibjin }aglanu on behalf of the Nobel Committee

"Piizes awaiueu by the Nobel Committee aie not ietiacteu. It iemains the obligation of the Committee to
uisassociate itself fiom actions taken by lauieates that fiustiate iathei than auvancing the fiateinity
between nations anu the abolition oi ieuuction of stanuing aimies. The Committee theiefoie joins with
the public statements of seveial Nobel Peace Lauieates in expiessing its iegiets ovei the conuuct of the
2uu9 piize iecipient.

"Not all ciiticism of the 2uu9 selection piocess has been accuiate oi appiopiiate. While the value of the
iecipient's name-iecognition was uiscusseu, it was not a uecisive factoi. While the pieceuent of having
awaiueu the piize in 1964 to a lauieate who went on to oppose wai only in 1967 was consiueieu, it was
likewise not a uecisive factoi. Noi was any compaiison uiawn between the 1964 anu 2uu9 lauieates
piioi to the 2uu9 acceptance speech.

"The absence of qualifications piioi to oi since the awaiuing of the 2uu9 Nobel Peace Piize was by no
means unique to this case. The piize has fiequently been awaiueu to auvocates foi wai oi to inuiviuuals
whose woik has not toucheu on the fielu of wai anu peace. The awaiuing of the piize is itself an act on
behalf of peace, anu that act involves iisks. The Committee will continue, as it is iequiieu, to awaiu piizes
in the mannei most likely to auvance its mission. When statements of iegiet become tools foi auvancing
the same agenua, they will be issueu."
