Actor's Divestment from Oil Used to
Support Suzuki Foundation
Vancouver, B.C - While the public at large was busy focussing on new photos
of kim Kardashian, approval for the Keystone Pipeline quietly passed US House
of Representatives on November 14", And while protests against the pipeline
are mounting—one of which saw David Suzuki's grandson, Tamo Campos,
arrested—many feel as though their concerns are falling on deaf ears, leading
them to take up a new approach to voicing their disapproval. Actor and author William B. Davis is one such
Canadian, who is adopting to “divest and donate” to support efforts to end our reliance on fossil fuels.
Divestment—ridding yourself of investments that support the fossil fuel industry—is becoming an increasingly
common way to voice dissent. Davis has long been a supporter of green technologies and has been vocal in his call
for Canadians to end their dependence on fossil fuels.
“The movement is gaining traction throughout North America and Europe because it sends a strong message to
companies, and essentially hits them where it hurts. Unfortunately these days it's often impossible to fully boycott a
‘multinational corporation, because of their expansive reach into everyday products,” says the actor well-known for
his work on the X-files.
By first donating his stocks to a charity such as the Suzuki Foundation, Davis’ act serves a dual purpose, “Firstly, it
allows me to have a portfolio of ethical investments that supports the kind of social and political change | want to see
happen in this country, Second, when the Suzuki Foundation sells the stocks they receive much needed funds to help
slow and hopefully halt climate change,”
‘The David Suzuki Foundation is engaged in the battle against global climate change on a variety of fronts, notably
through the Trottier Energy Futures Project. The Project brings together scientists, economists, and Canadians at
large with a view to creating sustainable energy development strategies.
