I was on the crescent in Filey when I noticed a bright ball of light in the sky-travelling north, from the south. I first fort it was the sky lab, but the object made a 90 degree turn heading out to the North sea, that's wen fast-jet turned up and followed the object. I video the event .

myself, concerning the papers anuary 1974.

First, I should explain that MOD files containing UFO sighting reports and correspondence are generally filed in the order in which the reports or correspondence have been received by the MOD and not in the order in which incidents are alleged to have occurred. This means that the only way to identify information on particular incidents is to recall all the files covering the relevant period and to conduct a manual search.

In order to answer your requests for information, we examined all the files which cover January 1974 and any relevant documents found were sent to you. These files are currently held at the Public Record Office and will be open for public viewing in January 2004 when they reach 30 years old. Thank you for your two recent letters concerning 'unidentified flying objects', over Selby and Filey on 7 April. I can confirm that we have received no other sighting reports from Yorkshire on that date.

With regard to air traffic in the area on 7 April, from a military perspective, in that part of the country there were Hawk, Tucano and Lynx aircraft operating below 2000ft at various times between 14:30 and 15:30. For information about civilian aircraft I am afraid you will have to contact LeedslBradford airport direct. I hope this is helpful.

With regard to the reports of 'UFO' sightings that you are investigating over Yorkshire on the 1 st ,2nd and 5th December, I can confirm that we have received no sighting reports from anywhere in the United Kingdom for these dates. We are satisfied that there is no corroborating evidence to suggest that the United Kingdom's airspace was breached by unauthorised air activity, which, as you will be aware from previous correspondence, is our only interest in these matters.

about halfway between the Shay and the lights at the top of Salterhebble (by the hospital).

(at this point - could I point out that neither me or my wife are X-files fansl)

My wife pointed to the sky towards the direction of the Hospital and said (casually and jokingly) " ... Oh look - an Unidentified Flying Object! ... fI

Sure enough in the sky was a big bright white light (comparatively, it seemed to be about half the size of the moon would look in the sky - and I'd guess that it was somewhere between there and Eiland). My first thoughts were that it was the Police helicopter, with it's light pointing towards us. But the Light move quite slowly from my right to my left (taking about 10 seconds in all) without so much as a flicker (I'd have thought that there's have been some flicker). There seemed to be some smoke (low cloud?) around the light. About half way across my line of sight a small piece of whatever it was dropped vertically down, first it was bright - then nothing - it was this thing dropping down (and the smoke) which made me think that it might not be a helicopter. The rest of the light continued moving _ from my right to my left, dropping slightly until it was no longer visible.

I half expected to hear the sirens of emergency vehicles - the only thing I could think of was that we'd just witnessed an aircraft in trouble and then going down .... but there was nothing in the news and no noise.

With regard to your enquiries, I can confirm that we have received no 'UFO' sighting reports from anywhere in the United Kingdom for either the 25108/02 or 30109/02. We are satisfied that in both instances there is no corroborating evidence to suggest that the United Kingdom's airspace was breached by unauthorised air activity.

I have consulted with relevant Departments within the Ministry of Defence and we are not aware of any operation or organisation such as the one you describe. As I explained in my letter of

11 March there was an organisation in the USA which studied UFO reports in the mid 1960s and produced the "CONDON" Report, but the UK was not involved in this study and we therefore have no material to send you.

I am writing with reference to your telephone conversation with_fthe Directorate of Information (Exploitation) in which you enquired about the whereabouts of a newspaper cutting mentioned in a letter dated 10 March 1974, a copy of which was sent to you with our letter of 20 September 2001.

The documents were copied from fileAF17464172 which is held at the Public Record Office in preparation for release in 2004. We have recalled the file and examined it again, but it does not contain the cutting you are seeking. It appears from the MOD's reply to the above mentioned letter, (dated 15 March 1974), that the letter was originally put on file S4f(Air)584/1113, with a copy placed on AF17464172. Staff have conducted an exhaustive search of archives at the Public Record Office and within the MOD for file S4f(Air)584/1/13, but no record of the file can be found. We can therefore only assume that it has not survived.

If you wish to pursue your enquiries we suggest it may be worth you contacting The Evening Standard newspaper at the following address. If they have a newspaper archive, they may be able to supply a copy of this article.

One of our correspondents requested some papers on UFOs from 1974 and some were sent from file AF/7464/72. One of these letters dated 10 March 1974 mentions an enclosed newspaper cutting from the London Evening Standard. This was not sent to him and he has now asked for it. I have the file back again from the PRO but the cutting is not on this file. The letter of reply, however, dated 15 March 1974 gives a file reference of S4f(Air)584/1/13 and hand written on the top is "copy for AF/7464/72". I therefore think that the S4f file is the most likely location of the original letter and newspaper cutting but I have no record of this file reference in any of my records. Do you have any ideas as to where this file may be, if it still exists?

Grateful for any help you can provide.

From the details you gave we have been unable to identify any relevant information and wonder if you could be referring to the CONDON Report which was produced in the USAin 1966. This report was the conclusion ofa study in to 59 UFO reports and concluded "While we do not think, at present, anything worthwhile is likely to come out of research, each individual case should be considered on its merits. No US agency is required- but this may not be the case for all time ".

If this is the material you are seeking, I can advise that the UK took no part in this USAF study and there is no record of the Air Ministry requesting or receiving this report.

UNEXPLAINED AERIAL PHENOMENA (~

Since the 1950s, reports of unidentified aerial phenomena from within UK airspace alone number thousands. These report objects which were not identifiable at the time of observation. UAPs have increased since the 1950s in line with the beginning of manned flight, the advent of outdoor laser displays, space flight, weather balloons, and so on. It has been recent MOD practice to refer to such phenomena, in the absence of rational explanation, as Unexplained Aerial Phenomena (UAP). MOD interest in UAP is only necessary as an assurance that any such object is not a threat to UK airspace or assets.

In August 1950 a Working Party was set up (at the suggestion of Sir Henry Tizard) who thought "flying saucers should be investigated". Records show that the 11th meeting of the Joint Technical Intelligence Committee (Ref. DSIIJTIC(51) Item 8 (1951)) received the Chairman's Report of the "Flying Saucer Working Party". The Committee decided that "the document should be regarded as the final report and, in view of the conclusions the Working Party should be dissolved". The Chairman

(Mr. G. L. Turney DS13) went on to say that, "following the lead given by the Americans on this subject, the report should have as little publicity as possible and outside circulation should be confined to one copy, for Sir Henry Tizard". The report has been released to the PRO. The UK was happy to allow the US studies to answer any outstanding questions.

The United States Air Force had started to take an official interest in 1948 with PROJECT SIGN, later changed to PROJECT GRUDGE and then to PROJECT BLUE BOOK. Such was the concern in the US that by 1952 the CIA instigated a covert study group to investigate the "10% of incredible reports from credible witnesses". In fact over 10,000 reports, spanning 19 years, were processed by 1965 (of which it was reported that only about 7% were unexplained). The covertness of this investigation subsequently contributed greatly to charges of a government 'cover-up'.

In 1952-3 the US set up the Robertson Panel (Intelligence Scientific Advisory Panel). Meanwhile, the possibility of the USSR using a UFO scare as a means of jamming communication channels, while simultaneously attacking the West was considered a serious possibility by the US - even though the investigation team had dismissed sightings of 'UFOs' as 'explainable'. In 1953, USAF began a more detailed collection of sighting information which, according to US Government statements, ceased in 1958 with no proof of extra-terrestrial origin.

The topic would not go away, however, and by 1966 the USA's CONDON Report had studied and reported on 59 events in detail. The report concluded "While we do not think, at present, anything worthwhile is likely to come out of research [into UFOs] each individual case should be considered on its merits. No (separate) US Agency is required - but this may not be the case for all time". The UK took no part

\\; in this USAF study, and there is no record of the Air Ministry requesting or receiving this report.

In the 1950s, the Air Ministry, produced a 'minimum format', a one page, 'UFO' reporting procedure for both public and military reporting of the phenomena. Reports of sightings from either military or civilian sources were sent to Defence Intelligence Staff (DIS) from the Air Staff in case they contained any information which was of value in DIS's task of analysing the performance and threat of foreign weapons systems, nuclear, chemical and biological weapons programmes and technologies and emerging technologies. However, none of the reports received over a period of 30 years have yielded any valuable information whatsoever. DIS therefore decided in December 2000, not to receive these reports any longer.

During this search three other papers were found but these are being withheld under Exemption 2 of the Code of Practice on Access to Government Information (Internal discussion and advice. Information whose disclosure would harm the frankness and candour of internal discussion)

If you are unhappy with the decision to withhold these papers and you wish to appeal, you should write in the first instance to the Ministry of Defence, Directorate oflnformation (Exploitation), Room 819B, St Giles Court, 1-13 St Giles High Street, London WC2H 8LD, requesting that the decision be reviewed. If following the internal review you remain dissatisfied, you can ask a Member of Parliament to take up the case with the Parliamentary Commissioner for Administration (the Ombudsman) who can investigate on your behalf. The Ombudsman will not, however, consider an investigation until the internal review process has been completed.

Tlvmk you for your letter d.rtcd February IL~th, the information it contained \"'],8 interesting and of value particularly when one discovers that the five reports you passed on of sightings on the e\;in~ of January 23 come from locations which, when plotted, all seem to lie along the same North to South or South to North track. The object that fell close to Corwen in North Hales on that evening, since POSITIVELY verified in all aspects except location, however lies not upon that track so one has to assume that either it was not the sky object common to the eyes of the five observers or that it was and that it changed course. That point of analysis however can await further investigation.

That 'something' came down an the Berwyn mountains on that night I am certain. A visit to the area witfuin 96 hours went on to include many interviews with local residents many of whom saw a ball of incredibly bright white light corne in and hit the reverse side of Bwlch y Gaseg, a hill spot heighted at 1805 ft or therabouts. The point of impact laying on the reverse side of the hill allowed only the flash and strong tremor together with the immense bang to be observed, felt and heard by those near enough to be affected. My point being that even though some local residents did not experience all three reactions, they occurred. And they occurred at the same time.

It is certain to the minds of both my friends who came with me and to me

that we were visited by an object that evening. It is a shame that reaction

to this highly important piece of news was met with such lack of enthusiasm

by those mo could have helped so much to further mankind's knowledge for may I humbly point out that there are only two ways at the moment that man's knowledge of the universe is extended. One by light and two by meteors placing aside for the moment the achievements of NASA.

The following extract from the meteorological logbook of the SS Tokyo Bay (29112), Captain M Lees, Port Kelang towards Southampton, is forwarded for your information.

24 January 1974 at 2150 GMT in 11020'S, OOo08'~. Five bodies, spectacularly incondescant, were observed traverging the sky. This group, in very close formation, fArat appeared on a bearing of 215 at an altitude above the horizon of approximately 9 t tr!velling in a generally northerly direction, finally disappearing on a bearing of 350 having maintained as close as it could be ascertained, a constant altitude. The duration of the observed transit across the sky, accurately timed, was in the order of 35-40 seconds, thus discounting the possibility of the phenomenon being a meteor shower though not eliminating the possibility of it being a meteor breaking

up and close to rea.chill8 the surface. On balance however the greater likelihood was attribated to it being a satellite disintegrating having re-entered the earth's atmosphere. Certainly this is the description given in the Marine Observers' Handbook would tend to support this theory. One further impression rather than an observation was of the size of these objects, something in the order of!rd sun's diameter relatively speaking, thus suggesting that they were possibly very close alth0U8h no Bound of their passage was heard (Mr R A Gill 2nd Officer).

Thank you for your letter of 5 August in which you enquire about an alleged 'UFO' sighting on 23 January 1974.

First, you mention "an exercise from Jerby Range on the Isle". There was a RAF station called RAF Jurby Headwhich supervised an air weapons range off the north west coast of the Isle of Man and it is possible that military aircraft were using the range on the 23 January 1974. However, the range closed in July 1993 and I am not able to confirm these details.

In your second paragraph, you talk about two squadrons of jet fighters, operating around Puffin Island and Capel Curig who allegedly brought down an object at Llandrillo and took away the five occupants.

Again, it is possible that there was a small squadron exercise being conducted in this area, at this time. However, if the air defence system had detected an aircraft that was considered to be a potential threat to the UK, it is unlikely that exercise aircraft would have been used to intercept it. It is also extremely unlikely that any aircraft would have been "brought down" over land, however sparsely populated. When military aircraft are training they do, of course, simulate such scenarios and references such as those you describe may have been heard on their radio frequencies. Records of these small exercises are not retained for long periods and even if it were possible to identify which squadron these aircraft came from, it is doubtful whether any records would have survived.

In your final paragraph, you enquired about a group of Royal Navy and US Navy ships off the North Wales coastline that you allege became "disoriented and all communications were lost". You also say there were fourteen casualties and two helicopters were lost. I have consulted my colleagues in the navy department but records ofRN aircraft accidents only go back as far as 1988 and they could find no other record of this incident.

We deal with correspondence from the public on 'unidentified flying objects' so often receive strange enquiries about alleged incidents that happened several years ago.

I have received a letter from one of our regulars who is talking about an alleged UFO incident on 23 January 1974 when (amongst other things) he says there was a "battle group" (possibly including US Ships) which became "disoriented and all communications were lost". He also says "there were fourteen casualties and the loss of two helicopters". We ususlly find with these reports that there is a quiet ordinary explaination for these events, which has nothing to do with UFOs.

I know it is a long shot but do you know of any Naval incident that happened around January 1974?

I have even spoken to the Flight Safety Centre in Yeovilton who hold a database of accidents in the hope that they might have a record of losing helicopters, but unfortunately their records only go back as far as 1988. An introduction to the Isle of Man and its aviation heritage

Situated in the centre of the Irish Sea, the land mass of the Isle of Man covers an area of approximately 220 square miles. It is around 32 miles long and 13 miles wide at its widest point. A fiercly independent country, its home rule goes back over 1,000 years to its link with the Vikings.

The Isle of Man, after rapid infrastructure development at the turn of the 19th century to accommodate the then expanding tourist industry, is today seeing an infrastructure change of a different sort. The fastest growing industry today is offshore finance, in all its many facets. To support this industry air transport plays an integral part.

It is widely recognised, due to air traffic control, operators training policies and modern aircraft that as we start another century air travel is one of the safest means of regional transport. This, though, was not always the case and in the earlier years of aviation development in the Isle of Man aircraft accidents were not uncommon.

The first aircraft accident recorded on the island was on Saturday 3rd May 1919 when Lieutenant Edwin Arnold Clear M.C. crashed his SE5A D7001 in a field close to King Williams College, near Castletown.

It was perhaps the 1930's with the advent of regular scheduled air services and air racing that air accidents figures began to increase. These accidents, though, were only a taste of what was to follow in the 1940's.

The RAF airfield at Jurby had opened in 1939; it would spend the entire war training air gunners, navigators and bombers. RAF Andreas became operational in 1941, principally as a fighter station, it too would later become a training station. Ronaldsway began the war as a Ground Defence Gunnery School, it was later taken over by the Admiralty and developed into a Royal Naval Air Station, HMS Urley. Here would be conducted torpedo, dive bombing and air crew training. Ronalsdway was also to remain throughout the war the islands only civil operated airfield, a regular service being maintained with Liverpool (Speke).

Quite apart from all the aerial activity created by these three airfields, the islands central location in the Irish Sea made it a valuable navigational aid. The island was regularly overflown by American aircraft, from the huge bases in Northern Ireland, en route to bases in the north and east of England. many of these aircraft would come to grief on the island's high ground.

The wartime expansion of the RAF and its need for trained airmen saw new airfields in the north of England, Scotland and Northern Ireland opening up on a weekly basis. Many of the aircraft from these training stations, often on navigational exercises (navex), could be seen flying over the island.

By the nature of all this aerial activity it was inevitable that accidents would occur. The reality is that in the six years of war the number of aircraft involved in accidents over and in the waters directly surrounding the Isle of Man ran into three figures. The number of lives lost in these accidents is placed at 280.

At the same time two squadrons of jet fighters where involved in an operation around Puffin Island and Capel Curig . Where a Bogey did not return an I.F.F. Signal Subsequently the object was brought down at Llandrillo, where it and the five occupants Where taken away.

At the same time around the North Wales coastline there was a battle group that became Disoriented, and all communications were lost. There were fourteen casualties and the loss of two helicopters.

With regard to our recent telephone conversation, I attach a list of all reports of 'unidentified flying objects' reported to the Ministry of Defence for the years 1995/6/718 & 2000 along with maps of their geographical spread throughout the United Kingdom. I should however emphasise that these figures relate to reported sightings of unidentifiable aerial activity; the vast majority of which will have mundane explanations such as aircraft lights, weather balloons etc ...

Thank you also for your letter dated 19 February 200 1 reporting a sighting of an 'unidentified flying object' in the vicinity of Queensbury, Bradford at 17:30 on 17 February 2001. I can confirm that we have received no other sighting reports for that date from anywhere in the United Kingdom. We are satisfied that there is no corroborating evidence to suggest that the United Kingdom's airspace was breached by unauthorised air activity, which as you will be aware from previous correspondence, is the only interest we have in these matters.
