UK, Germany affirm support to Libyan Government of National Accord

British Ambassador to Libya, Peter Millett, and the German Ambassador to Libya, Christian Buck, on Monday affirmed their countries’ support to Libya’s Government of National Accord (GNA), in an attempt to bolster the North African country’s security and stability.

Both diplomats’ remarks came during their separate meetings with the GNA’s Foreign Minister Mohamed Siala in the Libyan capital Tripoli.

In a press statement following the meeting with the Libyan FM on Monday, Millett expressed his gratitude to meet with Siala and officials of the GNA, stressing that the UK’s aim is to support the National Accord’s government and to apply the political agreement that was concluded in Skhirat in December 2015, in order to enhance Libya’s stability, security and prosperity.

The British Ambassador hoped to continuing close contact with the Libyan officials.

On his part, Buck said in a press statement, following his gathering with Siala, that the meeting discussed areas of mutual cooperation between the two countries.

Buck stressed that his country will provide support and will cooperate to helping the national accord’s government to pass through the current “challenging phase,” adding that he is working hardly to reopen the German embassy in Tripoli very soon.

The Libyan political agreement, signed in the Moroccan city of Skhirat on 17 December 2015, has led to the formation of the internationally-recognised government’s presidential council and the High State Council in Tripoli. It also led extending of the parliament’s term in Tobruk, despite the fact that the parliament is yet to recognise the Libyan Government of National Accord.

Since the overthrow of the Colonel Muammar Gaddafi’s regime during the 2011 uprising, Libya had been experiencing several political conflicts, which had included three administrations, the Government of National Accord, the Islamist-dominated National Salvation, and the National Transitional Council in Al- Bayda city.
