‘Palestinians have the right to sovereignty over Jerusalem,’ insists Kuwaiti envoy
Kuwait’s envoy to the Arab League warned on Tuesday of the dangerous consequences of US President Donald Trump’s plan to recognise Jerusalem as the capital of Israel, Anadolu has reported. Ahmed Al-Baker made his comments during a speech at the extraordinary meeting of the Arab League to discuss the undermining of the legal and historical status of Jerusalem.
“[Trump’s plan] is worrying and has dangerous consequences for the peace process, security and stability in the region,” Al-Baker pointed out. “The historic right of sovereignty over the holy city is for the Palestinians.” He renewed his country’s support for the rights of the Palestinians over Jerusalem and all the other Palestinian territories occupied in 1967.
The envoy said that Kuwait is sticking to the Arab Peace Initiative and UN Security Council resolutions 242 and 338. “Kuwait,” he explained, “believes in a just and comprehensive peace as a strategic solution for all the Arab countries.”
Moreover, Al-Baker warned that, as the place to which the early Muslims first turned in prayer, and the third holiest place on earth for them, Trump’s plan for Jerusalem will provoke Arabs and Muslims [all over the world] and will never serve peace and stability.
“We condemn any measures that undermine the status of Jerusalem, distort its identity or isolate it from its hinterland. We call on our friends in the US to be wise in their treatment of this issue and remain objective as peace mediators.”
