When Troy Turner woke up on Sept. 8, 2014, and discovered that his girlfriend Catherine Hoggle and their two youngest children were nowhere to be found, he tried hard to hide his panic. “I got my oldest son dressed for school because I didn’t want to freak him out,” says Turner, 45. He walked their son to the bus stop near their Maryland home and had just called 911 when Catherine, who suffered with mental illness, drove up in his van. Alone. “She said she had put the kids in a new daycare,” he says, which eased his concerns a bit.
