    Abbas calls for African Union to take part in peace process

    Palestinian Authority (PA) President Mahmoud Abbas yesterday called on the African Union to take part in the Israeli-Palestinian peace process as part of UN-brokered multi-national mechanism, the Anadolu Agency reported.

    During a speech before the 30th Summit of the African Union held in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia, Abbas reiterated the importance that “all members of African Union commit to the UN Security Council resolution 478 issued in 1980 which prevents setting up diplomatic missions in Jerusalem”.

    He asked them not to take any measures regarding Jerusalem and the Palestinian cause that violate UN resolutions.

    “We want Jerusalem an open capital for all religions,” he stressed.

    The US, he added, has ruled itself out of its role as mediator in the peace process after its recognition of Jerusalem as the capital of Israel. “It will never be able to propose a just solution for any issue in the Middle East,” he said.
