Modern MOD ‘Warwell’

MILITARY vehicles have been transported by rail for decades, often on specialist wagons built for the purpose, including the Warwell, which was originally ordered by the Ministry of Supply during the Second World War and placed in traffic in 1942 and 1943 for the task of transporting Sherman tanks.

A total of 200 were constructed by three manufacturers: Gloucester Carriage & Wagon built half of the wagons; Head Wrightson fabricated 75, while the remainder were built by the Southern Railway.
