Who doesn’t love a tasty, nourishing tater! Whether chipped, mashed, boiled, baked or smothered in mayonnaise, the humble potato is a superstar crop – a British number one thanks to its easy-growing habit and generous harvests.
Home-grown spuds don’t last long in our household. Digging them up is a truly momentous occasion. It’s a job for which I enrol my enthusiastic five-year-old daughter, who scrabbles around in the freshly lifted soil like an excited puppy, picking out the spoils ready for cooking in a twist of the oven dial!
Potatoes are very forgiving, which is why they are so often recommended as a good crop for beginners. The combination of earthing up and rambunctious foliage leaves little room for weeds, while at peak growth you can almost see the plants growing. Good
