ALL THE FEELS

All surfaces have texture, whether rough or smooth, complex or simple. How we perceive texture can be influenced by several factors, including distance, lighting and other textures in the vicinity. In your home, your signature style will dictate the mood of your combined spaces. It could be cool and sophisticated, laid-back and luxurious, vibrant and energised, or bohemian and natural. To hone in on your specific style, do a little soul searching and think about the things you love — your favourite pieces of furniture, the rooms that make you feel most comfortable. Think about objects that are much-loved treasures. Is there any commonality in them — theme, texture, shape?

It’ll help to create a mood or inspiration board. Gather swatches of fabrics, sample paint pots, wallpaper samples, bric-a-brac and snip photos from magazines (Home Design is a great place to start!). Be selective and only choose the things that truly inspire you, paying attention to their textural elements.

Establishing a look you love will ultimately save you time and money. You can then focus on creating a home that’s a true reflection of who you are.
