HOOKED! Meet Inventor Katelyn M. Sweeney

Katelyn M. Sweeney tapped into her inner inventor in high school. That’s when the Natick, Massachusetts, native joined a Lemelson-MIT InvenTeam. She and her teammates designed a remote-control submersible rescue vehicle. They earned an invitation to the White House in 2014, and Sweeney met President Barack Obama. In 2016, the team’s project was issued U.S. patent number 9,511,833.

And Sweeney hasn’t slowed down. She graduated from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) in June 2018 with a bachelor’s degree in mechanical engineering. She now works for OneWeb in California as a mechanical engineer. She is helping design a satellite-based communications network that will enable high-speed, broadband access for people around the world. Sweeney talked with about her invention
