ULYSSES’S FIRST DRUMMER quit to become a monk. More recently, bass player Jules “died of old age… or got so old we had to retire him to the seaside”. Singer, guitarist and founder Luke Smith struggles to recall the precise details, but it’s clear that the Bath rock’n’rollers’ trajectory hasn’t exactly been linear.
Yet life, for all its hindrances, has poured into the band’s music to positive effect, leading them beyond the ‘70s glam-rock’ pigeonhole proves this with emotive vignettes of life (real and otherwise) tied up in a “grown-up” cocktail of fizzing, thoughtful pop rock, foot-stomping glam and seamless harmonies.
