Barrett Tillman’s Topgun story [March 2019] was predictably well written, with his usual knowledge and strong point of view. During my first two-week Navy Reserve trip out to Miramar in 1973 with VFP-306 with its RF-8G Crusaders, I happened to be the squadron duty officer when I got a memorable phone call: “Hi, this is Randy Cunningham over at Topgun. Would you be interested in meeting us for a few engagements?” >

> Of course I knew who Cunningham was. It was only a few months since he and as members of VF-96, and been assigned to the Navy’s Fighter Weapons School.
