    The 2018 FIDE World Chess Championship took place in London in November. Magnus Carlsen of Norway, who has been the world champion since 2013, defeated Fabiano Caruana of the United States by winning three straight games at rapid time controls after all 12 games at classical time controls were drawn. The prize fund of 1 million euros was divided 55%–45% between the winner and loser. The split would have been 60–40 had the match been decided without resorting to tiebreak games.
