Artist and illustrator Peter Malone remembers seeing the death mask of Oliver Cromwell at Southampton’s Bargate Museum at the tender age of six. Intrigued, he vividly recalls the deep sagging under Cromwell’s eyes, cast in plaster perpetuity, and a seed was sown.
