“One cannot think well, love well, sleep well, if one has not dined well,” wrote Virginia Woolf in A Room of One’s Own, and there’s no arguing with that. We’ve all experienced enough post-meal comas (or ‘postprandial somnolence’, in the medical lingo) to know that when you dine well, you sleep well. However, the question of what dining well actually constitutes has proven more vexing over the years—and if you or your children do it wrong, you could be setting yourselves up for fitful sleep or even full-blown insomnia.
