The EN1 in the south is in pretty good condition, but as soon as you venture off the tarmac – including the Maputo bypass – you’ll appreciate having and some steep corrugated tracks are pretty standard en route to beach-side lodges – engage low-range, keep the revs up and watch the overhanging palm trunks. From the Kosi Bay or Komatipoort borders you can be sure that every sho’t left to explore places like Maputo Special Reserve, Zinave or Limpopo national parks, as well as coastal detours from Ponta do Ouro to Vilanculos, will be exhilarating.
