When HM Inspectorate of Constabulary investigated firearms licensing in 2015 it found many shortcomings and that good practice was the exception.
This was just as it had done in 1993 and 2002. Among the shortcomings noted in 2015 were: failure to implement the recommendations of earlier reports; forces not following the Home Office Guidance; inconsistency between forces; GP involvement relying entirely on goodwill; absence of nationally accredited training and a wide disparity in turnaround times for processing applications.
