■ British Railways announced it made an operating profit of £56 million in 1969 and, after repayment of interest charges, there was abalance of about £15 million. Journeys and passenger miles rose for the first time in several years, giving an improvement of 10% in receipts. Freight tonnage also rose and, together with parcels traffic, this generated 4% extra income at £9 million.
