Co-ops for everyone (NOT JUST HIPPIES!)
The word co-op conjures up some interesting images. You’re either thinking of our largest dairy conglomerate, or a hippie community somewhere remote buying bulk beans and rice in the 70s and 80s. The kind of co-opping we’re talking about today is much more inclusive, flexible, modern and accessible.
Co-ops have been around for a long time. If you have a slightly alternative grandparent, chances are they were co-opping back in the day. But the art of community buying got lost somewhere in the corporate takeover of the 90s. Capitalism became king, and there just wasn’t much room for people-centred initiatives any longer. Fast forward 30 years, and we’re relearning how to build community-led supply chains, rather than corporate-led cash-grabbing thoughtless buying.
