Amazing GRAZING HERBIVORE GUT TYPES EXPLAINED – PART 5

This migration is also known as the ‘great migration’, where 1.4-1.7 million white bearded wildebeest, thousands of Thomson’s gazelles, zebras and other antelope migrate together in a semicircular route through the Maasai Mara National Reserve in Kenya and the Serengeti National Park, the Ngorongoro Conservation Area and the Maswa Game Reserve, Grumeti Game Reserve and the Ikorongo Game Reserves in Tanzania on a yearly basis.

When considering the migration, a few questions come to mind:

1 For what purpose do these animals migrate?

2 What is the reason for them following the same route year after year?

3 Why don’t they simply stay in a specific area?

In short, the continual search for better-quality food when the available grazing in a particular area dries out or runs out is possibly the biggest reason, but this being said, it doesn’t mean much without understanding the animals, and their nutrient requirements at the different physiological states the animals may be in. For example, the nutrient requirements of a wildebeest cow in milk is greater than a dry cow or a bull. Nutritious green grass supplies the mother enough food to maintain her condition and supply her calf with milk, but when the green grass matures and dries out, be it from age or lack of moisture
