Ek is gebore en het grootgeword in Kenia in die 1940’s. Ons het destyds in die Eldoret-distrik geboer met beeste en gemengde gesaaides. Vandag dink ek met heimwee terug aan daardie lief-like, vrugbare land en die ongekunstelde lewe wat ons toe gehad het. Daar was altyd ’n oorvloed van lewensmiddele en ons het selfonderhoudend geleef en gewerk. Die lug was suiwer, water was onbesoedeld en volop, die grond was vrugbaar en onbesmet.

Na die beëindiging van die Vryheidsoorlog teen Britse imperialisme, het baie mense geen werk gehad nie en het gevolglik verarm. Brittanje, wat sy mag in Oos-Afrika wou uitbrei, het mense toe genooi om hulle in Kenia te kom
