Women’s football is in a holding pattern, concerned the sport could be set back years as the economic consequences of a world shuttered by COVID-19 take hold.

With most clubs dependent on the backing of men’s teams, and national programmes reliant on the largesse of male-dominated federations, the crisis presents “an almost existential threat” to the sport according to a report by players union FIFPro, with a risk of “mass unemployment and recession”.
