“CLASSIC” HORSE VANS AT FORT KNOX, 1968

In the summer of 1968, I took Army Basic Training at Fort Knox. At that time, it had a full training brigade for basic recruit training. This was in addition to the Armor Officers Basic, the Armor School, the resident mechanized brigade that supported tactical training, 1st Army NCO School, the Armor Board, Kentucky National Guard, and a raft of other Army units and agencies on post.

A couple of unusual vehicle used in 1968 to haul basic training recruits around in company-sized lots were some large semi-trailered horse vans from around 1932 or so when Fort Knox was both a horse remount center and cavalry station. These horse vans had been used by two
