My nightmare life

Snuggling up in bed, I listened avidly as Mum read my bedtime story to me. We were reading Harry Potter And The Prisoner of Azkhaban, but as Mum described the Dementors – black cloaked figures that sucked your soul away – I found myself shaking with fear.

Even though they terrified me, I knew they were only make-believe, that there was no such thing as monsters. But by the time I was 15, I had reason to doubt whether that was actually true...

I was at boarding school when the nightmares started.
