I WAS forty-seven years old and on vacation in San Diego when, which had recently been released and was getting lots of buzz. The book—a touching story of first love between two teenagers who meet in a cancer support group—left me gutted. When I finished wiping away my tears, I had one clear thought: I want to write a novel. And because I work best with deadlines, I decided I wanted to be published by the time I turned fifty.
