DRIFTS OF COSMOS, ZINNIA AND SALVIA NOD GENTLY in the summer breeze near a beehive in the garden at Roger and Hayley Mason’s weatherboard cottage in Toowoomba, Queensland, 130 kilometres west of Brisbane. The bees collect pollen from the Masons’ sheltered garden, along with other suburban plots and nearby flowering gums.
In a few weeks’ time, Roger will collect honey from this colony and others, including his family’s properties just outside town, to bottle and share with customers of their Settler Hives business. What started with two beehives in
