I’m a big fan of protests. As a teenager, I giddily marched against the Vietnam War and generalised about US imperialism. I believed in the cause, loved big crowds and felt lucky to have had it all happening just 12km from my home in Washington, DC.
In the Trump era, political protest has been revitalised, but what happened at the US Capitol last week was less principled protest than collective petulance: an “if we can’t have the government, then nobody can” kind of thing. Donald Trump has enabled America’s jackasses, because if the president doesn’t have to respect anyone or anything, why should they?
