YOUR letter regarding the question ‘how long is a) made me smile. It reminded me of clearing out my late grandfather’s desk—we found a brown envelope with the message ‘Bits of string too short for use’ written on the outside. Sure enough, it was full of very small bits of string. Why they were kept, we’ll never know.
