- Rating: 5 out of 5 stars5/5I can't believe I've never reviewed this. It is only one of my favorite picture books of ALL TIME!
- Rating: 5 out of 5 stars5/5Call me silly, but this book was one of my favorites so far. It could be because I am a cat lady with four of my own. Or it could also be that I call one of my cats "Kitten" even though she has a name (Merlin), but I wanted there to be more of this book. I thought it was so cute how the kitten kept getting itself into trouble but somehow finding a way out its way out just from wanting more milk. Too cute. Kids would love it!
- Rating: 4 out of 5 stars4/54starP. 4 and up. Kitten thinks the moon is a bowl of milk for her and goes on an adventure to reach it. I don't know that I could attribute this book really to Radical Change.
- Rating: 4 out of 5 stars4/5Kitten mistakes the full moon for a big bowl of milk in the sky. She tries to get it, but fails. It's a cute book for preschoolers and could lead to some interesting conversations about the moon, about reflections, about kittens. Since giving bowls of milk to kittens is discouraged, I'm a bit surprised this book incorporated this, but it might lead to an interesting conversation about what you should or should not give to a kitten. The illustrations are well done. It is deserving of the Caldecott Medal it won.
- Rating: 4 out of 5 stars4/5I really liked this story. It was about a kitten who thought the full moon was a bowl of milk. I liked it because you can compare it to you being confused about something. I feel like this story would be good for students because they may get confused a lot and this could help them relate. I also loved the illustrations in this story. I really liked how they were all black and white. This helped them tie into the nighttime theme.
- Rating: 5 out of 5 stars5/5This book is so cute! Winner of the Caldecott Medal, the book tells the ironic tale of a kitten who thinks the moon is a bowl of milk, and all of her understandable attempts to reach it. I expect this book is especially popular with younger children.
- Rating: 3 out of 5 stars3/5I really was not that impressed with this story. I guess it is good for young readers, K-1, because it uses simple language and pictures, and has repetition. However, it won a Caldecott medal, and I did not think that the pictures were anything special. Using only pencil, Kevin Henkes does seem to bring the moon and cat to life using shading techniques, but I was not overwhelmed with excitement about how wonderful the images were. Summary: A cat sees the full moon in the sky, and thinking that it is a bowl of milk, tries to get to it, and is unsuccessful.
- Rating: 4 out of 5 stars4/5We read this book one time for the moon festival at Sunday School. We found it again today at the library and I was surprised to find that my preschooler remembered the story from when we'd read it about 2 months ago. She then proceeded to ask to read it three times in a row. With its simple, evocative drawings and a protagonist it's easy to root for, I find this book very pleasant to read over and over again.
- Rating: 4 out of 5 stars4/5The night Kitten sees her first full moon, she thinks it's a little bowl of milk in the sky, and she wants it. She jumps at it, and chases it, and climbs a tall tree all the way to the top, but still she can't reach it. When she returns home there is a bowl of milk waiting for her.
- Rating: 4 out of 5 stars4/5Kitten's First Full Moon is a story about a kitten who notices a full moon for the first time, and believes that it is a bowl of milk in the sky. The kitten struggles to reach the moon, that she thinks is milk, but fails and returns home discouraged. When she arrives back home, a bowl of milk is there waiting for her, which makes a happy ending for the kitten. I think this is a good book to use for testing predictions, because once the kitten gives up, it is predictable that the milk will be there waiting for her at home. The illustrator uses gray scale in the pictures, creating a fitting representation for the night-time feel for the setting of the story. Also, bold and thing lines are used to create contrast between things in the foreground and background, and contrast between the actions of the cat and the background as well. The illustrator also manages to create great expression in the kitten's face just by making simple emphasis on the mouth, eyes, and ears. The man character is a kitten, which most children adore and value; this keeps them interested in the story due to the attraction that most kids have for animals. The story uses a kitten as the subject. Had a cat been used, it may have not pertained to children as well as the kitten does.
- Rating: 4 out of 5 stars4/5Kitten sees the moon in the sky and mistakes it for a big bowl of milk. Try as he might, he just can't catch it!This kitten is so cute! He's determined to get the moon and drink it down. All of the drawings are black and white, but it adds to the book with the white kitten, white moon, and white milk. Adorable!Classroom connection: The moon
- Rating: 4 out of 5 stars4/5The illistrations in this book are really nice. I read this book right before I went to bed and it was perfect. This is a good bedtime story for children.
- Rating: 3 out of 5 stars3/5Very cute picture book. Adorable drawings. (I don't have too much to say about it.)
- Rating: 3 out of 5 stars3/5Summary:Kitten's First Full Moon is about a little kitten who is hungry. She looks up at the moon and thinks it is a giant bowl of milk just for her. She tries many ways to get to this bowl of milk. She tries to lick the sky, jump for it, chasing it, climbing a tree, and jumping into a lake. Of course none of these work so she returns home to find a bowl of milk on the porch waiting for her. She goes from being unlucky to lucky. Personal Reaction:I think the story is very cute. It shows the bravery of young things when there is something they want. The pictures in the book, in my opinion, are very descriptive and interesting even though it isn't in color. I find that very interesting. Classroom Extension Ideas:1. Teach a segment on bravery2. Teach a segment on the stars and moon and their shapes3. It could be done as a play for younger children
- Rating: 3 out of 5 stars3/5Summary: Kitten see's the moon and thinks it is a bowl of milk. The kitten tries and tries many ways to get up to the moon. When she tries going up a tree to get to the moon she see's its reflection in the pond. The poor kitty falls in the pond. After falling in the pond she realizes that she will never get to it. So cold, sad and oh so hungry Kitten goes back home. When she gets there she see's a nice big bowl of milk for her and she is happy.Personal Reaction: I thought this book was adorable! Best suited for younger kids in kindergarten or first grade. New readers if thats what they are called these days. The illustrations were good. They could have used more color though. Classroom Extension Ideas:1. I could use this to teach not to loose hope possibly. 2. How even animals have adventures and that anyone could have an adventure.
- Rating: 5 out of 5 stars5/5Very unique pictures for a current book- sweet story.
- Rating: 5 out of 5 stars5/5SUMMARY:A small kitten sees the big moon, and thinks to herself it is a big bowl of milk. She goes on a journey looking for the big bowl of milk. Sadly, she can never quite get to it. Suddenly, she sees an even bigger bowl of milk, the reflection of the moon in a pond, she jumps for the bowl of milk to only end up wet and sad. The little kitten marches home where she finds a big bowl of milk waiting for her. Lucky kitten. PERSONAL REACTION:I thought the illustrations, although colorless, were incredible. I loved its simplicity. I also thought the story was simple and sweet. I would recommend it as a bedtime story for a little girl or boy who likes cats. EXTENSION IDEAS:This story could be used to introduce a lesson on what the moon is made of. Let all of the children guess what the moon is made of, and then give them the actual details. This would also be a good book to inform children on the importance of milk. Inspire children to reach for the moon by eating healthy, and obtaining big, strong bones.
- Rating: 3 out of 5 stars3/5The kitten thinks the moon is a bowl of milk, and she tries to reach it. She cannot reach the bowl of milk. Come to her surprise, after her long day, there is a bowl of milk awaiting her. This book has marvelous illustrations, and I love how there is no color other than black and white.
- Rating: 1 out of 5 stars1/5This is a beautifully illustrated book about a kitten who chases the moon because she believes it is a saucer of milk. She tries everything possible to get to the "bowl of milk" but with luck. She even saw the moon's reflection in a pond and leaped into the water. She finally returns home very tired, wet, sad and hungry to find a warm saucer of milk on the porch waiting for her.
- Rating: 4 out of 5 stars4/5This is the book we explored on the first day of class. It is about a kitten who thinks the moon's reflection is a saucer of milk. The book is charming and masterfully illustrated. It is just too primary for my age group. I see it being good in a first grade or kindergarten classroom library.
- Rating: 4 out of 5 stars4/5This is a cute story about a kitten who sees the moon and thinks it is a bowl of milk. The text has black and white illustrations that tell a charming tale.
- Rating: 3 out of 5 stars3/5This is a story about a kitten who first sees the moon and thinks it is a bowl of milk. She tries so hard to drink the milk but finally gives up and discovers a bowl of milk waiting for her at home! The illustrations in this story are very interesting and intriguing!
- Rating: 5 out of 5 stars5/5In this delightful picture book, a little unnamed kitten sees the full moon for the first time and thinks it is a giant bowl of milk. She tries everything to get to the bowl but fails. Dejected, she returns home to find ... a bowl of milk waiting on the porch! The narrative contains just enough repetition to please children but not so much as to become obnoxious to the adults that read to them! As a recipient of the prestigious Caldecott Medal, one might expect mind-blowing illustrations from this book. Rather, the simple gray-scale drawings fit the text perfectly in a less-is-more way. The movements and expressions of the little kitten are spot on, as anyone with a cat can attest!
- Rating: 3 out of 5 stars3/5A story about a kitten who thinks the moon is a bowl of milk and her chase to find it. Illustrations are interesting because Henkes uses only black and white.
- Rating: 3 out of 5 stars3/5Kitten is full of wonder and excitement because she believes she sees a bowl of milk in the sky. After many attempts to achieve the bowl of milk and failing she is dishearten and heads back home. By the time kitten got home she had something exciting waiting for her on the porch, a bowl of milk! I really enjoyed reading this book. This book would be good to share when incorporating the moon and stars. In the classroom, I would have the children draw a picture of their version of the story whether they want to draw kitten, moon, or the sky. Also, for another activity the children can make moons out of paper plates.
- Rating: 5 out of 5 stars5/5Awesome!! The title says is all, she thinks the moon is a bowl of milk, so she keeps chasing it and trying to reach it.
- Rating: 4 out of 5 stars4/5In this Caldecott winning book we see that the spirit of determination will have its rewards if you don't give up even if the thing you want most is a bowl full of moon!
- Rating: 4 out of 5 stars4/5Persistence pays off for this hungry kitten. She mistakes a full moon for a delicious bowl of milk. The book follows the kitten at her many attempts trying to reach a little bowl of milk in the sky. She runs, she jumps, she climbs, and she leaps but she never gets closer to her prize. However, when she finally returns home, there is a great big bowl of milk, waiting for her on the porch. The Black and White illustrations seem to sparkle on the page. The pictures are very cute and appealing to young students.
- Rating: 5 out of 5 stars5/5This book tells the story of a kitten who sees the full moon for the very first time in her life, thinks the moon is a bowl of milk and tries every means to drink that bowl of milk. The title is the start point and clarifies the context of the story that is about to happen. The storyline is simple and easy to follow. It tends to encourage children to try to pursue their goals, even though there will be obstacles along the way and the goals might not be realistic. The kitten is brave enough to chase after what she wants. After all the difficulties, she has got a happy ending. The illustration is in black and white and the language is simple. This book is highly recommended to all age children and can be a good bedtime story.
- Rating: 3 out of 5 stars3/5When Kitten mistakes the full moon for a bowl of milk, she ends up tired, wet, and hungry trying to reach it.
