Mary Gauthier, ep. 141: Help produce Basic Folk by contributing at basicfolk.com/donate Mary Gauthier's book, Saved By A Song, is a must-read for all humans with feelings that need feeling. Gauthier has been writing and recording songs since the the early 90's, but she actually started her music career relatively late at age 30. She had grown up as an adopted child in Thibodaux, Louisiana, which was something that she didn't realize had greatly impacted her until she was in her 40's. Kaiti learned violin using the suzuki method, which is based in learning by ear. After violin came training in piano, viola, french horn, cello and drums. She discovered songwriting when her mom read her diary and she found it a way to simultaneously express and deflect her feelings. Then she finally picked up the guitar in the church band and realized this would be the vessel for her songwriting. Kaiti moved to Cambridge, ten years ago, to do service work as an AmeriCorps volunteer and has found much inspiration in joy in service

Tub Talks featuring Aska Matsumiya: Aska Matsumiya is a celebrated composer, known for film scores such as After Yang, I’m Your Woman, Bruised, Skate Kitchen and Spike Jonze’s, ‘I’m Here’. However, her journey through music, motherhood, mixed cultural identity and friendship, is what has inspired me to get her in the tub at nearly 9 months pregnant, and talk. Raised as a classical pianist in a Japanese household, Aska has been expressing herself musically across a vast landscape of genres: from punk to indie rock, classical, and electronic. Aska became a mother for the first time as a nineteen year old, and embarks on her next motherhood journey within weeks of this episode airing. Finding her voice through film composition, motherhood, and trusting in her intuition, Aska forges her own path into a life well-lived – inspiring us to follow the clues, and do the same.

One to re-read now and again. Concise but meaningful. Rituals are in all our types of relationships. They define so many of our memories and some are so difficult to give up. Depiction of grieving and some of healing process.
