About this audiobook

Stacy Justice is just your average green-eyed, redheaded, twenty-something witch who would rather focus on her job as a reporter than practice the crazy magic her grandmother and great-aunts are into. She's perfectly content to spend her free time hanging with her cop boyfriend and her gassy Great Dane and helping her cousin Cinnamon run the Black Opal bar. But when the Opal goes up in flames, Stacy may need that magic after all.

The blaze was arson-and Cinnamon is the prime suspect. Determined to clear her cousin's name, Stacy digs deep into the crime and makes a shocking discovery amid the rubble. It's clear someone wants her dead- and she'll have to dodge everything from angry motorists to exploding chickens to survive. It's time to dust off her so-called magic skills. But will they be there when she needs them?

With its strong, sexy heroine and her razor-sharp wit, and its collection of eccentric small-town characters, Opal Fire introduces a bewitching new mystery series.

This is a new cozy mystery series featuring Stacy Justice, a witch and newspaper reporter. I like the plot, the myriad of characters and the flow of the story. It was an easy read that I enjoyed.

From Lilac Wolf and StuffThis story centers around Stacy, called Anastasia by her grandma Birdie. She is a reporter in a small tourist town, dating the police chief. She has a Great Dane named Thor, who is a big goofy puppy but a well trained one thanks to her cousin Cinnamon. Cinnamon is half Italian and Cin's mother is 100% Italian, always cooking and yelling at her creepy brother from the old country. As if it weren't goofy enough in Stacy's family with Grandma Birdie and Birdie's sisters. The town is also full of quirky characters, such as every small town has.Opal Fire was a wild, silly, well-written tale. I have heard it described as a mystery with a paranormal bend. I would say that's the best description. Stacy is a reporter and wants to get to the bottom of who burned down the bar and murdered the girl discovered there. Very much a mystery novel. She is dating Leo, the police chief who butts heads with her at every turn. I felt that part was a little too romance novel, but I was still rooting for them. I felt like Stacy didn't know how or if she even wanted to embrace her witchiness.Barbra did a great job keeping the story flowing and the writing consistent. There were a great many conversations that turned into silly banter and made me giggle.I love the title, Opal Fire. Opal Fire has a catchy cover in dark orange. Kind of a twilight kind of color, but fits in with the overall fire and Imbolc theme as well. This novel as a fast read. At times I did wish it would slow down, but that was only because I didn't want to finish so fast. Seriously, it was super fast. An occasional slow down would have been nice, just to let the poor girl get her breath. But at the same time, when I think about that, that may not have worked. A murder is serious business and isn't going to let you get a dinner date in before the next thing happens. Poor Stacy is so busy, she barely sleeps as it is.The story takes place in Amethyst, Illinois, which is a fictional town. But the description is a good one. A town that fully depends on the tourism they catch from people traveling east and west. There are far too many towns in that boat. They can't afford to put off the tourists, and try to keep the bigger crimes quiet. Stacy feels the pressure to keep the murder and fire out of the weekend editions - which are printed with visiting tourists in mind.

A quirky, fun, Sabrina the teenage witch type story.

Excellent story! I tend to stay away from self-published books since I'm rarely wowed by the quality of either the writing or the editing (not to mention the atrocious behaviour or a few SPA's that ruin it for the rest), but this book (and series) is the exception that proves the rule. I loved the characters and found it very easy to get caught up in the setting, the plot and the dialogue. There were quite a few moments throughout the book that had me laughing out loud. The mystery itself was so well done I didn't have any idea at all, until the end, who the culprit was. I thought the representation of the magic was very well integrated and nothing felt too over-the-top. I'm looking forward to reading more about Stacy and her family.

I read this book in an evening and found myself laughing out loud. It is a very light, fun mystery with paranormal aspects. (One of the other reviews calls it a "cotton candy fun read" - I totally agree) Stacy is a journalist who finds herself looking into who tried to burn her cousin's bar as well as other questions that arise along the way. Stacy is also starting to learn about her power and status as a witch and a member of the Geraghty Girls (her great-aunts). This is the first book of the series. I will be taking a look at the second.

The cast of characters and the mystery here share much with Janet Evanovich's Stephanie Plum series. Stacy has the crazy family and the two boyfriends fighting to protect her. She manages to get herself into a whole lot of trouble without much effort. And she has her trusted sidekick helping her along the way. The similarities are a little much, though, in fairness, might not have been intentional. The problem I had is I just didn't like Stacy Justice nearly as much as I like Stephanie Plum. Stacy's character is supposed to be independent and a little sassy, but instead her constant sarcasm, demeaning comments, and bossiness make her difficult to sympathize with. She treats her boss and coworker with total disrespect. She snaps at her family for interfering, then gets upset when they don't immediately jump to help her. While I did laugh at some of her antics, I also found her immature and annoying. I would not want to be her friend.I felt an overall lack of character development. Leo is supposed to be Stacy's big love interest, but their relationship never fleshes out. Their meetings are brief and almost businesslike at times. Cinnamon is supposedly married but her husband is strangely missing throughout. A lot of characters move in and out of the story, a little like chess pieces or cardboard cutouts. I wanted more dimension. The plot is interesting enough, though also borders on silly. Stacy Justice is doing all the investigating, bumbling around the town, while the cops are doing what, exactly? As far as I could tell, they did nothing but respond to her calls. The story does have its good moments. The witchcraft aspect is actually well done. The author captures the feel of paganism here, showing us things like the use of crystals for healing. It's a light read and a pleasant distraction. Overall, though, it lacked the depth and plausibility I need in mystery.

This isn't getting four stars because it is brilliant, its getting four stars because I loved the story. I know folks wanted to smack Stacy aaround for making really bad decisions with her actions but its a fluff book! A cotton candy fun read.

The characters need a bit more plumping up and as much as I liked some.of the antics I also cringed at the ridiculousness of them. Not much but some. I've had the book forever and needed a might read that was paranormal and fun.

Cinnamon and Thor are my favorites. I want a great Dane like Thor! I want to get to know the sisters more and Leo I may punch. There are more but we didn't get a full picture. Fir ne this is what dinged it. So again yij ask why four stars. Well 3.5..? Because it did what a book like this is suppose to do. Take ne away and entertain me.

Favorite funny? The fiats being vandalized with battery operated Christmas lights and let out to wander the road. hahhaa

Thumbs up for the pagan references. This was written by a practitioner or someone who has researched well. And there's a recipe in the back!

Not urban but suburban paranormal foxy mystery. Its not lit-fic. Its chick-fic with magic, mayhem and fun. I will read two and hope she folks her characters out a bit more. if I was on the biog this would be a 3.5 star book.

I don't have that much to say about this one. I read some of the reviews for this one, and many said this book is rally funny. I don't get it. I didn't find any of it funny. Ridiculous maybe, but not funny. I've got the second one for kindle (it was also a freebie) so I might read it at some point, but I'm in no hurry.

Perfect beach read of a young witch who happens to be helping her cousin set up in her bar when a fire breaks out. Is it arson or was it an accident because of faulty wiring? Fortunately, nobody was hurt .... or was there someone? As Anastasia learns to come to terms with her gifts, she has to contend with her witchy grandmother and aunts, one of whom is missing a few slices of ham in her sandwich, an enthusiastic photojournalist, a sexy chief of police boyfriend, a charming Great Dane and her helpful ex-boyfriend....and she has to do this while someone's clearly out to kill her.Fun and entertaining.

Book Info: Genre: Paranormal Mystery/Chick LitReading Level: AdultRecommended for: fans of paranormal romance, chick litTrigger Warnings: murder, assault on womenSpoiler Alert: While it would be possible to write a review without spoilers, it would be difficult to adequately explain why I disliked the story without providing the specific example I chose. So be aware that there is a spoiler in the 3rd paragraph below. I will hide in on the two sites that allow such (and as a result, it won't be accessible at all on my blog), but the rest of you? Sorry, but it's there. It's marked, though, although without formatting it might be hard to see.My Thoughts: I had already picked up the first two books in this series when the third one came up for my Amazon Vine selection, so I was very excited to discover that, since the books sounded like something I would like and this would save me having to track that third one down. This is the first book in the Stacy Justice series, followed by Bloodstone and Tiger's Eye. A fourth book, Emerald Isle, is scheduled for release sometime in 2013.I sort of went back and forth on my feelings on this book. I would be enjoying it for what is was, but then I'd stop and think about it and have all kinds of issues with it, which are mostly personal issues about not caring much for “chick lit”. I also kept wanting to compare it to Practical Magic because the Geraghty Girls reminded me of the aunties. But when it came right down to it, and despite how much I loved Practical Magic, I really didn't like the story too much. The reason has to do with the reasons I don't much care for chick lit or many romances, and that is that too many authors think that “feisty” translates into a complete in ability to deal with things rationally. [So your boyfriend and ex-boyfriend are worried about you because there have been attacks and put a tracking device on your car. You are attacked again and the car goes through the ice. You almost drown. Since they could track you, they arrive just in the nick of time. Do you thank them? Are you happy to be saved? No, you're angry that they were watching over you. (hide spoiler)] What on earth is WRONG with these people? That isn't “feisty”, that's “too stupid to live.” If it weren't for the fact that a) I need to read the series because the third one is a Vine book and b) there is a twist at the very end that makes me hopeful the next book will be better, I'd just abandon this whole thing. However, if you like chick lit, if you like paranormal romances, if you like those sorts of stories, you will probably like this one, so don't let my grumpiness turn you off it.Disclosure: I picked this book up on Amazon during a KDP promotion. All opinions are my own.Synopsis: Stacy Justice did not expect to be set on fire that night, but being raised by witches prepares one for life's little surprises. In fact, she isn't the least bit shocked when her cousin is accused of arson, or when her divorced grandparents sign up for a marriage retreat, or even when her own boyfriend hauls her off to jail. But when a decades-old secret is discovered within the walls of her cousin's bar, even Stacy is rattled. Now, someone wants her dead and she finds herself dodging angry motorists, exploding chickens and a very creepy man who lurks around every corner. As she begins to dig up the past, Stacy learns that even those closest to her have something to hide—and she's about to discover a destiny she never imagined.
