About this audiobook

Pleasures of the Garden begins in ancient China and ends on the Isle of Man; it admires both stately landscaped parks and a soap box full of red geraniums on a fire-escape. It shows that gardening is for everybody, whatever their resources. It features classic writers on gardens such as John Evelyn and Gertrude Jekyll, famous historical figures like Pliny, Francis Bacon and Thomas Jefferson, the novelists Jane Austen, Charlotte Brontë and Robert Louis Stevenson, and the poets John Donne, John Clare, W.B. Yeats and Rudyard Kipling.

I'm not sure how I came across this, but I ordered an audio anthology of short readings from classic literature concerning gardening. It's titled The Pleasures of the Garden There are 4 CDs, each one has a different focus. 1 is garden love, 2 is grand designs, 3 is practical gardening and 4 is solace for body and soul. I almost returned it not fully read, because I found the readers' voices so annoying, particularly the compiler, Christina Hardyment.I'm glad I persevered, as I discovered some great pieces, especially on the third disc. It has excerpts from the personal diaries of Thomas Jefferson and Elizabeth Arnim, and laugh out loud bits by William Morris and Rudyard Kipling. Also memorable are pieces by Robert Louis Stevenson and a wonderful tribute to old tools by Gertrude Jekyll.
