About this audiobook

Police officers shot

Detective Michael Bennett arrests an infamous Mexican crime lord in a deadly chase that leaves Bennett's lifelong friend Hughie McDonough dead. From jail, the prisoner vows to rain epic violence down upon New York City-and to get revenge on Michael Bennett.

Judges murdered

To escape the chaos, Bennett takes his ten kids and their beautiful nanny, Mary Catherine, on a much-needed vacation to his family's cabin near Newburgh, New York. But instead of the calm and happy town he remembers from growing up, they step into a nightmare worse than they could have ever imagined. Newburgh is an inferno of warring gangs, and there's little the police – or Bennett – can do to keep the children safe.

Target: Michael Bennett

As violence overwhelms the state, Bennett is torn between protecting his hometown and saving New York City. A partner in his investigations, federal prosecutor Tara McLellan, brings him new weapons for the battle – and an attraction that endangers his relationship with Mary Catherine. A no-holds-barred, pedal-to-the-floor, action-packed novel, I, Michael Bennett is James Patterson at his most personal and most thrilling best.

This is a good book, part of the "Michael Bennett" books by James Patterson. It is an easy read, and certainly kept your interest. The book was fairly predictable.

Quick review: I enjoyed the first 3 books. 4th was still good, but I felt the series was taking a turn for the worse. Here's book 5, and while there were entertaining parts, I feel it was lacking. There's only so many times you can read the same story formula. I also feel like, by now, Bennett should have his act together and realize the bad guys will go after him and his family. He was blindsided a few too many times for a man with his past experiences.

Still a fast "entertaining" read, but there's not much making me want to pick up the next book this time around...especially with the ending of this one (see spoiler if you want to know the type of ending).

This book ends in a cliffhanger. WHY? Four books before it and all pretty much wrapped the story up, while keeping it going for Bennett to fight another day, another bad guy. This one dragged on too much to the point where I see this cliffhanger as just being a way to sell book 6. I don't know, just doesn't fit the series for me.

The 5th installment of the Michael Bennett series. Our hero busts a drug lord who comes after him and his family--that's the plot. Good story, but the ending was either a cliff-hanger with the story to be finished in a sequel, or it was the end of the Michael Bennett series. I wish I knew which.

The 5th instalment of the Michael Bennett series. This time, Michael busts a big time South America crime lord Perrine and gets him thrown into jail. However Perrine operates from inside the prison, as you would expect and still runs things. Anywho, long story short, Perrine busts out jail puts hits out on Michael and his family. Michael is trying to catch this killer and drugs lord again. And then the book ends, randomly - sort of, just like that. And I'm a bit like WTF?? Where's the rest of my f-ing book?So off I go to hunt around my house searching for the next instalment. This is disappointing from Patterson as you don't actually get a full story. Its basically half the story. I borrowed this from the library so I don't feel too ripped up, just sad disappointment!

For whatever reason, this is the first book of James Patterson's that I've read. I just never got around to reading anything of his before now. I actually bought this book for my mother-in-law, back at Mother's Day, maybe, or for her birthday. My reasoning for choosing this book (aside from the fact that I know she reads a lot, and she's interested in all sorts of books) was because I thought she'd take interest in the fact that Patterson is such an advocate for young readers. I learned that while taking a Children's Literature class, and since then, my two teenage daughters have read a few of his YA books--and LOVED them! So, even though I'd never read anything of his yet, I bought this for my MIL. She said she found it a bit disturbing, so of course, I was intrigued!

I burned through this book quickly. I am a HUGE fan of Stephen King's writing style, and he'll probably always be my favorite. However, I was greatly pleased with Patterson's writing style. He really pulled me into the story quickly and had me engaged throughout the whole story. I'm not a great lover of series, in general, but I'm going to HAVE to continue on with the Michael Bennett series... and now I'm convinced that Patterson is so gifted, he'll soon become another one of my favorite authors--I plan to read everything of his, which is an exciting adventure! SO HAPPY RIGHT NOW!!!!!

more James Patterson fluff! It had actually been a while since I read a Michael Bennett book and this was a nice dip back into the Bennett's world. I'm still amazed by their having an apartment big enough for their family on the UWS, but I also liked that this book was also taking then out of the city. I felt bad for MB, but I also found myself angry with him. He fouled it up with Tara and Mary Catherine. At what point does he learn? Some of this was surreal to the point of being unrealistic -- a breakout on the 14th floor of the courthouse? Boys running away with girls who happen to be tied into the Latin King thug charged with a hit on them? But I read it. I always do. The cliffhanger with the next book was a interesting twist and I look forward to reading the new one as soon as it's out to find out how their time in Witness Protection goes. One thing Patterson and his co writers do best is the sympathetic older characters: Nana Mama and Seamus.

I found myself wrapped deeply into this new Michael Bennett story and thrilled by all the twists and turns. It is also very intriguing to see how far the reach of a drug lord can go - even from a prison cell. It doesn't hurt to be a billionaire either, just spend a million here and there to get what you want. Many of the events in this book can be the headlines today. The cartels are ruthless and it appears like nobody can stop them. Now along comes Michael Bennett, he does things to this drug lord that nobody had ever lived to talk about. Michael shows his bravado, getting into this guys face and actually hurts him. These people kill families! Michael has a very large family and soon finds they are not indispensable. He takes them all to his northern New York boyhood cabin on the lake. But things have also changed here and drug gangs are everywhere. People have left the small community, homes are boarded, businesses closed. A war is taking place - gang against gang and gangs against the Police. Michael finds himself fighting on two fronts - the common denominator being drugs.Unbeknown to Michael, his flirtation with other women has taken a toll on the young Mary Elizabeth and she leaves the family and Michael. You don't know what you've lost until it's gone. Michael is heartbroken and finally understands. Will she come back? Will the flame come back on? What will Michael do?I stayed up late to finish the story and like other reviewers thought my Kindle lost a few pages. Oh, okay, I'm beginning to understand, it's like season finales on television, JP is going to keep us on edge until the next book arrives. And I'll be like most JP followers, either pre-order or buy it the day it comes out.I still rate it a 4/5 because it was a thrilling ride from start to finish and I am looking forward to the next release.John PodlaskiAuthor, Cherries - A Vietnam War Novel

Michael Bennett in a joint task force brings down a powerful Mexican crime lord Manuel Perrine. In the process his life long friend Hughie, who is with the drug enforcement, is killed. Michael vows to see Perrine put behind bars for the rest of his life and also to get the person who killed Hughie. If you have read any of the Michael Bennett series then you won't be disappointed with this one. It is a fast paced page turner with all our old friends back, the 10 Bennett children, Mary Catherine, and Michaels grandfather Father Seamus. I love reading about his family. I will have to say I was surprised at the ending but not disappointed. If you have not read any of this series then I would suggest starting with the first to get the back story but you don't have to. I can't wait for the next Michael Bennett to come out. I highly recommend this book.

Typical Patterson; short chapters making for a 2-day read. I thought this was the best Michael Bennett yet. The main bad guy was so evil, I found myself routing for the good guys to get him one-way-or-the-other. Spoiler Alert!! I was disappointed that Perrine got away at the end. However, it would appear that there will be a sequel to this story. There will be that to look forward to.

For years now I've been saying I won't read anymore James Patterson books because he isn't the only one writing them. Seems like a gimmick that recently all his books have been co-authored with a few different authors. I picked up this one because I have read the rest of his Michael Bennett series and enjoyed them and thought maybe this one would be decent. While I did enjoy the read and got caught up in the drama, I thought the ending was pretty terrible. Not only did he end on a horrible note, but he left it as a cliffhanger. I very much dislike when authors need to ensure people will buy their next book by copping out on the ending.

I LOVE mysteries so I feel like I keep writing the same thing for every review of every book I read. I really enjoyed the Cliffhanger with this one as well as the banter and relationship Michael Bennett has with his kids.

Poor Detective Michael Bennett has really stepped into the proverbial doo-doo in this chapter of the series. Here we see the NYPD lead by Bennett execute an arrest warrant against a Mexican cartel leader who is passing through the United States in order to see his daughter graduate. Whilst the execution of the warrant is ultimately successful, several people die in the process including Bennett's long time friend. Unfortunately for the citizens of New York, the arrest of the cartel leader unleashes a frenzy of violence as attempts are made to arrange for the release of the leader through not only coercion but violence as well. Some of this is directed directly against Bennett and his family, which leads to a few harrowing situations and ultimately sees the novel ending on quite the cliff hanger as opposed to the previously seen story wrap ups in prior novels.

Cigarettes, soap operas, champagne, potato crisps and James Patterson: none of them benefits you in any way but all are compulsively addictive and, as any addict knows, avoid them altogether because once you start, it’s very difficult to stop. I’ve just enjoyed [if that’s the right word] a ‘lost weekend’ of my own recently: I managed to stay away from the cigs, champers and crisps, but made up for it by consuming three James Pattersons one after the other, chain-smoking them as it were, over two days. The prolific Mr. P has already brought out six of a projected twelve books this year but three was my limit. Until next time… The good thing about products from Patterson and Co. [he uses a team of ‘with’ writers] is that you know what to expect: the books are machine-written to a strict formula which includes entirely predictable twists but bars any real surprises. The June release, I, Michael Bennett, is fifth in the Michael Bennett series. Now Michael is a widowed New York cop with ten – count them, TEN – adopted children. He has a beautiful [naturally] live-in Irish nanny to take care of the brood and [no surprise] there is an unmistakable but unstated sexual frisson between them. Bennett is, of course, of Irish descent, went to Catholic school and frequents Irish pubs where he sings mournful Irish songs: when the head of a drug cartel has his old friend [also an Irish cop] killed Michael is enraged and ‘takes him down’, making New York a safer place but unwittingly pinning a target on his own back. A year later and, quelle surprise, Michael’s family is threatened. He takes the brood out of town to the family cabin but the drug dealer escapes and, mad-dog killer that he is, exacts terrible vengeance on anyone involved in his downfall. Top of the list is Mike and the kids, and the nanny, and even Mike’s grandfather. Gosh!Paragraph-long chapters, as many twists as a Free State road, cardboard characters and indifferent writing laden with clichés are hallmarks of the Patterson style – but I’m not slating it. He has had over 80 books published in the last ten years and while his literary talents might not rank much above those of, say, Barbara Cartland, the man is a gifted story teller with a positive genius for getting you to turn the next page. I read three in one sitting so I know.
