About this audiobook

With nothing but the clothes on his back—and something horrific snapping at his heels—Jack Winter fled his rural Georgia home when he was still just a boy. Watching the world he knew vanish in a trucker’s rearview mirror, he thought he was leaving an unspeakable nightmare behind forever. But years later, the bright new future he’s built suddenly turns pitch black, as something fiendishly familiar looms dead ahead.

When Jack, his wife Aimee, and their two small children survive a violent car crash, it seems like a miracle. But Jack knows what he saw on the road that night, and it wasn’t divine intervention. The profound evil from his past won’t let them die…at least not quickly. It’s back, and it’s hungry; ready to make Jack pay for running, to work its malignant magic on his angelic youngest daughter, and to whisper a chilling promise: I’ve always been here, and I’ll never leave.

Country comfort is no match for spine-tingling Southern gothic suspense in Ania Ahlborn’s tale of an ordinary man with a demon on his back. Seed plants its page-turning terror deep in your soul, and lets it grow wild.

As soon as I started reading this book, I felt exited. I told myself I found a good horror writer that can genuinely deliver on the scares, but then the book went on and I eventually felt disappointed. I can't quite put my finger on what was wrong. The animal cruelty is a turn off for me. I think maybe I let it distract me from enjoying the book. At the end, I told myself that even though I didn't enjoy the book, I still enjoyed the author. she showed potential. I read two other books from her and unfortunately this is as good as she gets so far. Thumbs down on this book and the two others, the shuddering and the devil crept in. Sorry Mis ahlborn.

Next to Brother, this is my new favorite Ania Ahlborn novel, and I'm honestly quite upset with myself for not reading it sooner.

If you are into stories of the Paranormal Activity sort, with visuals so powerfully creepy and terrifying you unwillingly curl your toes and flinch as you read, well, this is the book for you.

Isn't often that a book makes me scared, but this book did it.

I saw this one mentioned several times while lurking in the Horror Aficionados group and Amazon keeps putting it on sale and recommending it to me.

It is decently written but for whatever reason, it just didn't resonate with me.

I guess I just expected it to be more Southern Gothic -- which generally relies more on menace, atmosphere, and dread than it does on gore.

I really liked this book but it was kind of nuts. Really scary. Wish there would have been a reason for the things Jack had done to tie together with what Charlie did.

This book kept me at the edge of my seat… or my bed I should say!
It was full off suspense, very graphic, and had a surprise ending that’s for sure!
I chose this book as my books clubs first read, and everyone loved it!
I definitely recommend this book to horror fan.

I’ve read and listened to this book multiple times, the story is told in a manner that remains relatable, everyday, and familiar, but never loses my interest, unsettling, nor scare factor!

A quick read. A fathers curse. His family doomed to relive his childhood. Nothing to stop it only to watch it play out again.

Wonderful story: scary, tragic, with well-drawn characters; brilliant narrator whose talent allows him to give voice to all kinds of people and different accents.

Loved the ending, but now I really want to know that truckers story. It would be great to see this from his point of view. The story seems to hint that he may know what is going on or is involved somehow.

This book was brutal in every way, but undeniably captivating and moving. This is NOT for the light hearted. For those who aren’t familiar with the authors work, maybe don’t have this be your first. I’d recommend maybe The Shuddering- it feels more Slasher and YA. It’s gory, but not quite cruel which her books can be (in the best ways imo).

This book was captivating, from the first few pages I was hooked. This is a somewhat fast paced book, no-nonsense, straight to the point. Which was a much needed break from the slow burns that you have to force yourself through the first 3/4 of, hoping the ending will make it worth the read. I actually enjoyed the lack of a happy ending, as I feel that they are unrealistic and are often times not the most interesting way to end the story. Overall one of my favorite books of the year, this author never fails to excite me.

It's a good read, scary and well written but all these authors books have a sad ending, I really don't like such sad endings.

If you're familiar with demonic possessions, you know how this story will go, but still a fun twist on the genre.

The book had an interesting premise. Another reader said the ending was a bit much. I’d agree with that. It started off eerie and then got gratuitous toward the end. If you’re the type of person who likes things to be explained or have some sort of reason behind it, you’ll probably be frustrated. I wish I would’ve known that going into it. I kept wanting the “mystery” to be solved, but nothing was ever really explained. I also thought the main character made a lot of stupid decisions so that made it hard for me to sympathize with him.

Welp, now I’m an Ahlborn fanatic.
This was a well-rounded horror story with likable characters, moving and relatable emotion, and a mysterious, enthralling plot. I felt very satisfied with the ending too which is somewhat rare in horror fiction - at least for me. Also: the audiobook narrator was fantastic—fit the mood and voiced the characters well.

    Now, onto Ahlborn’s novel, Brother!
