The main character is endearing and very cute. The book captured my heart with the illustrations and font type. I loved the way Nancy discovers the elements of poetry. Where was this book when I was in school? It brought clarity for many elements that eluded me as a young student. Jane O’Connor has a written several books about Fancy Nancy. This is my favorite thus far.
Rating: 5Fancy Nancy loves poetry when her teacher introduces it to the class. But, when she tries to write her poem for the poet-tree, she has writer’s block which makes it nearly impossible to start her poem. When she asks her teacher for help, she gets inspired to write her poem. This is a great book for silent reading and a read aloud to help children understand and appreciate poetry.
Rating: 5I enjoy the "Fancy Nancy" books for many reasons. First, the illustrations. I think they are great because they are very detailed and colorful. Next, I love the way the pages are set up. In "Fancy Nancy: Poet Extraordinaire" each page has the main text along with poems and pictures taken by Nancy, and even some captions. I think this page set up style in a fiction book is something readers will not be used to, but it will draw them in even more! I also like the font the author chose. It matches the idea that Nancy is a very "fancy" little girl. There is not really a problem or a "message" in the book, but the main idea is simply that Nancy loves to read and create her own poems. The book is filled with little poems written by Nancy and other poets.
Rating: 5Fancy Nancy is a series favorite for one of the girls I babysit. I think initially she is attracted to the fun, quirky, and unique nature of Nancy. In this certain Fancy Nancy book Nancy is learning about poetry in class. From there she wants to know all about poetry, everyone's favorite poem, and how to write her own. This book contains majority of "children written" poetry but it gets a child interested in poetry. In the book Nancy explain many poet terms like anthology, couplet, and ode. The reader even follows Nancy through the struggles of writing her own poem and going through writer's block. Children can relate to Nancy because she is a fellow peer who goes through life like many students do. She goes to school and hangs out with her friends and family. Through the draw and familiarity of Nancy's character students relate to her voice and easily learn from her many lessons on life and learning. By the end of the book the girls wanted to write their own poetry because they were inspired!

Rating: 1This book is not your typical Fancy Nancy books. Yes there is adventure, and yes there are new vocabulary to learn, but this is also a nonfiction book. It has beginning information on things someone might find exploring. It even makes sure to tell you that all the information in this book are real. It was a wonderful read and a great addition to the series.
Rating: 4Fancy Nancy and her best friend Bree return in this small picture-book, which is part fiction and part non-fiction. The fictional framing device involves the Explorer Extraordinaire club that the girls have formed, in order to observe and study the natural world around them, from insects (including butterflies!) to birds. Naturally, their younger siblings also want to join, and the process whereby that eventually happens forms the crux of the fictional narrative. The bulk of the text, however, is informative, giving lots of details about the insects and birds the girls are studying. Photographs are intermingled with the watercolor artwork, adding to the feeling that this is a half-and-half book...Having read and enjoyed all of the full-sized Fancy Nancy picture-books, which are exclusively fictional (although very informative, as it concerns vocabulary), I was curious to pick up Fancy Nancy: Explorer Extraordinaire!, the first of a number of smaller-sized picture-books that use Nancy and her friends to explore non-fiction topics. All in all, I found this a pleasant and educational book, one which introduces quite a bit of natural history, while also telling an entertaining fictional tale featuring that popular figure, Fancy Nancy. The artwork by Robin Preiss Glasser was as appealing as ever, with the added bonus of photographs. Recommended to Fancy Nancy fans, and to anyone looking for "girly" books that also take a positive approach to things like insects and the outdoors.
Rating: 3This is a cute, light nonfiction-ish read for kids. Nancy and her best friend, Bree, have formed an explorer club and investigate insects, spiders, birds and trees, all while trailed by their younger siblings. Young readers get facts, like the differences between insects and spiders, what makes deciduous trees evergreens, and the differences between moths and butterflies.Nancy also has wonderful suggestions on how to act like a proper naturalist - don't pull leaves or flowers, don't catch butterflies (they're fragile), and leave everything the way you've found it. The story ends with Nancy and her friend's younger siblings finding a baby bird, and, since birds don't mind if a human's touched their young, Nancy's mother puts it back into its nest.And, of course, there are a few charming vocabulary lessons along the way! Recommended.
Rating: 4Fancy Nancy and her friend have started up a club and they go off and explorer. The book goes through what essentials you would need to go on an adventure. It is full of great vocabulary words with kid friendly definitions. It also goes through some different types of bugs. Great book to get children to use their imagination.
