Description
Like a car alarm, bagpipe music, or a doorbell ringing in the middle of the night, hearing this all-new audio edition of The Bad Beginning will only upset you. This unique multi-voice recording brings the first book in Lemony Snicket's alarming A Series of Unfortunate Events to such terrible life that no one should really have to experience it. Unless you have an ear for such ghastly details as a tragic fire, a nefarious villain, itchy clothing, and cold porridge for breakfast, all narrated in chilly detail by the distinguished, and disturbed, Tim Curry with a team of talented readers, you would be better off listening to something else.

Avis
This is an excellent accompaniment to enjoy before watching the fantastic Netflix staging of this material. The Netflix films have incredibly high production values, are more than acceptably true to the source material (but vary enough to afford multiple discussions about the differences and why the author may have made those choices when adapting for the screen), plus on screen add a great deal of new characterization and the fleshing out of some otherwise quite minor characters. In particular, the baby, Sunny, gains a whole new level of personality with the use of subtitles to translate her coos and burbles into sharply funny observations. Handler has production credits on the Netflix version so no doubt he had a hand in the screenwriting.
While there is a good bit of peril and violence in Handler's books about and for children, there is so much self referential tongue in cheek and literary banter that it all just slides by merrily. It is all a great wink at the formulae of classic children's fare.
