- Rating: 5 out of 5 stars5/5A great story written so well by the knowledgeable and talented hand of Elizabeth Peters.
- Rating: 4 out of 5 stars4/5Amelia Peabody's life is presently seeming to follow the story line of an ancient egyptian fairy tale about a prince who was doomed to die by the crocodile , the snake or the dog. A young princess from another kingdom fell in love with him, married him, learned of the prophecy and determined that she would save him from his fate. The ending of the fairytale has been lost to the dusts of the desert, but Amelia plans to work on this tale and then finds she is living it.
She and Emerson, having left the children in England begin to find themselves in danger almost from the moment they arrive at Shepheards Hotel. There are a fews attempts at kidnapping both of them before one is successfully accomplished and Emerson is spirited away after having been subdued by a cudgel to the head. Thus the adventure begins and it is filled with excitement, treachery, betrayal murder and more.
peabody armed with her parasol and pistol are a match for any villain. I began reading this series and then began listening to it as narrated by Barbara Rosenblat who does such a wonderful job that all the characters come alive. She does a marvelous job of capturing the essence of both Peabody and Emerson that these characters take on additional dimension that eluded me in the written versions. I was never a person who really enjoyed audio versions but this experience with Barbara Rosenblat has made me a true fan. - Rating: 4 out of 5 stars4/5I enjoy these books because they combine two of my favorite things ... a mystery and a book with a historical bent! Another one of those series I started in the middle and am now trying to play catch up.
- Rating: 4 out of 5 stars4/5How do you add romantic interest to a series where the romantic leads have been married for the last five books? Give one of them amnesia, of course! There are the normal twists and turns involved in this latest adventure, but by far the most fun is watching Amelia "woo" Emerson again. I'm also enjoying how much Ramses gets under Amelia's skin - for precisely the same character traits that she also possesses!
- Rating: 3 out of 5 stars3/5This could have been a 5 if it wasn't for the narrator. So upsetting the remaining series is read by her. She changed the entire character of Emerson and Amelia.
- Rating: 5 out of 5 stars5/5I've been reading the Amelia Peabody series in order, and this is my favorite so far. I'm not sure if it is the best written, or I am getting more attached to the characters the more I read! The books of this series would be adequate as stand-alone mysteries but are richest when read in order. Emerson's kidnapping and amnesia are wonderful plot twists! I can't wait to read the next installment. Highly recommended!
- Rating: 3 out of 5 stars3/5Love the series but, this is my least favorite book of the series. So, don’t judge the rest of series by this one book. Too much arguing between two main characters and not enough of their Son, Ramses. PS Need to read books in order anyway, to follow the story line
- Rating: 4 out of 5 stars4/5I very much enjoyed this installment of the further adventures of Amelia Peabody. Amelia and Emerson are on their own in Egypt (sans Ramses) and, as usual, someone is trying to harm them. Now an old married couple, Amelia longs for the early days of their courtship. All I can say is, be careful for what you wish for - you just might get it! Lo and behold, Emerson is kidnapped and when he is finally found he has amnesia and has no memory of ever meeting Amelia - much less marrying her! As Amelia copes with this new (but very much like the old) Emerson, they try to determine who is after them and why. Much humor (Ramses letters to his parents are hilarious) and I very much enjoyed the character of Cyrus Vandergelt, their American friend.
- Rating: 4 out of 5 stars4/5I love Barbara Rosenblatt. Such a terrific narrator for these books.
- Rating: 5 out of 5 stars5/5This installment shines with plotting, wit, and pacing, redeeming the series from its slump into ennui in #6 (The Last Camel...). It also gives us a respite from Ramses, about whom a little goes a long way.
- Rating: 4 out of 5 stars4/5It's back to Egypt for this book as Amelia and Emerson return alone for a second honeymoon. Inevitably things go wrong and Emerson is kidnapped by a gang seeking information about the lost civilisation Amelia and Emerson discovered in The Tiger in the Smoke. Although Amelia pulls off a daring rescue she's too late to rescue Emerson's memory. As Amelia fights to restore Emerson's memory she has to contend with attempts on both their lives. Despite these trials this is a fun instalment in the series, Emerson's amnesia is a nice device reminding us of the beginnings of Emerson's and Amelia's relationship. Although they've left Ramses at home he's not silent as Amelia receives as series of hilarious letters detailing shenanigans at home.
- Rating: 5 out of 5 stars5/5This was a fun summer listen. I totally enjoy the characters that the reader brings to life. There was quite a twist at the end that I suspected but never could quite confirm. The Enerson's adventures are always fun.
- Rating: 3 out of 5 stars3/5Reviewed June 1998 As with all E. Peters Egyptian mysteries you are overwhelmed with her descriptions of Egyptian life and history. Maybe I need a new imagination but I have a difficult time visualizing these sites. Her character of Peabody can be tiring as well, with her parasol and medicines always at the ready. This mystery is a continuance of her previous novel and she brought the two together nicely. The mystery was inventive but the love story between Emmerson and Peabody is the best surprise. Their lives are wonderful and envious. 26-1998
