About this audiobook

Sergeant Duncan O'Conner has seen it all before. Beautiful erotic dancer murdered at home, no suspect, no motive. But there's one clue: she's missing her heart. It's enough to make the hard-bitten Kansas City cop enlist the help of a necro - one of the dead-channeling freaks who live in the domed city of nearby Valhalla. It's a long shot, but desperate crimes call for desperate measures. Unlike the other "high-bloods" in Valhalla, Callie Brown considers her abilities a gift, not a curse. But when she reads the dancer's final thoughts, she senses a powerful presence blocking her vision. This is no ordinary homicide. This is the work of a legendary necromancer who controls souls. A ravenous force that will put Callie's skills to the test, O'Conner's career at risk, and both their hearts on the line...literally.

Review courtesy of Dark Faerie TalesQuick & Dirty: Duncan and Callie are in a fight for their lives and the fate of all mankind whether it be high-blood or human. They must work together to stop a horrible necromancer from raising the dead and ruining the newly awakened feelings they share for each other.Opening Sentence: Valhalla had always been shrouded in mystery. The Review:I loved this book. At first I wasn’t sure if I would or not but it was really good. It was nice seeing the story through both Callie, a high-bloods’, point of view and also from Duncan’s point of view, who is “human”. Through their shared narrative we got to see the prejudices on both sides of the Dome known as Valhalla where the high-bloods live. For those who have never read any of Alexandra Ivy’s Sentinel series, high-bloods are those people who posses super abilities, such as being a witch or a psychic. The part I liked about this book was that there were no werewolves or vampires. Instead the author kept it to just abilities that a regular human could possibly have if we used more of our brains. This was different from most supernatural stories.Callie and Duncan’s story was wonderful but it did not take away from the murder case they were trying to solve. Callie, a high-blood, is called in whenever someone is killed in a manner that is thought to be done supernaturally. She is called in because she is a necromancer or diviner depending on which side of the dome you asked. As such this means that after a person dies she can go into their last moments and see how they died and any other info that may be important. despite prejudice against high-bloods she is still willing to help solve crimes among the humans. Callie is so tough, sweet, and innocent in many ways. Then we have Duncan O’Connor. He is a sergeant in the Kansas City police department and has had feelings for Callie for a long time, but she never seemed to like him back. He is the bad boy type even though he is a cop. When we are first introduced to him he is headed to the scene of the crime completely drunk. Also when it comes to Callie he is like a barbarian who wants his woman and will hurt anyone who hurts her. I loved to watch as their romance grows. Unfortunately the necromancer who has killed our murder victim wants Callie as part of his evil plan.I was so interested in this story and did not want to put it down. I couldn’t wait until the end to see if Duncan and Callie stayed together even though they were from different worlds. I also wanted to see whether the bad guy succeeded or if they could stop him in time. This was a wonderful book and I recommend it to those who like supernatural but would like to try something different than vampires and werewolves.Notable Scene:“Who found the Body?”“A silent alarm was tripped.”“Cause of death?”“She’s missing her heart.”FTC Advisory: Zebra/Kensington provided me with a copy of Born in Blood. No goody bags, sponsorships, “material connections,” or bribes were exchanged for my review.

*Book source ~ A review copy was provided in exchange for an honest review.Sergeant Duncan O’Connor is a Kansa City cop investigating the death of an exotic dancer who is missing her heart. The unusual circumstances of her death mean that a Necromancer is called from Valhalla to help with the investigation. Though Callie Brown prefers to be called a Diviner. If she can get to a body before the spark is gone then she can see the person’s final moments. It’s in those moments that Callie may be able to pinpoint a murderer. However, this case is much different. The dancer’s spark disappears before Callie can get a look at her murderer, but an unusual man remains. A dangerous man. And he shouldn’t be there. Duncan and Callie, along with her Sentinel (bodyguard) Fane, go to Valhalla to talk with the Mave. There’s something very wrong brewing on the horizon and they’re pretty sure the dancer’s death is only the beginning. After reading the short story Out of Control (The Sentinels, #0.5) in the anthology Predatory I’ve wanted to read more about the Sentinels and Valhalla. This story does not disappoint! While I found Duncan to be a bit overbearing, horn doggish and a tad conceited for my tastes, he’s actually a pretty good guy deep down. Callie is a wonderful heroine, strong and yet vulnerable, but best of all, no pushover when it comes to Duncan. Excellent! There are other great characters who make an appearance, but Fane…oh, my, Fane. He is one hot dude and I can’t wait for his story! *fans self*The world in this book is so interesting! Even the villain and his back story were interesting. There is a lot of information and world-building going on yet it doesn’t bog the story down one bit. I’m hooked. I love this slightly different take on the paranormal and I’m really looking forward to continuing with this series.

Born in Blood (The Sentinels #1)by Alexandra IvyKansas City Sergeant Duncan O’Conner’s murder investigation solicits the help of necromancer, Callie Brown, to help solve the paranormal case. What Callie discovers is the work of a powerful necromancer who should not exist. Working together they need to stop the murderer and try not to become the next casualty. The world they live in has a lot of trust issues between the supernatural community, better known as high-bloods or freaks and humans. They need to overcome prejudices in order to work with each other. I enjoyed that the characters discovered things about themselves throughout the novel that enable them to grow as individuals and accept details about themselves. Alexandra Ivy is off to a great start with this new series. She does a good job at making the story seem believable. Born in Blood has fast pace action that will keep you guessing. Listened for Fun/Read for Review (Audible/NetGalley)Overall Rating: 4.00Story Rating: 4.25Character Rating: 3.75Audio Rating: 4.00 (Not Part of the Overall Rating)First Thoughts when Finished: Born in Blood was my first time reading Alexandra Ivy and it won't be my last.Story Thoughts: Incredible world building and an interesting mystery. I was really impressed by how much I enjoyed the case at the center of Born in Blood. It was well though out, executed well, and had me hooked from beginning to end. I wasn't really invested in the romance part of the story though. I think that had more to do with the characters than the story though.Character Thoughts: I am going to admit it took awhile for me to warm up to both Duncan and Callie. I didn't dislike them but they didn't make me want to root for them either. About 3/4 of the way through the book though I began to really start liking them. I did like the side characters though and can't wait for the BF/Guardian story. That is a couple that I am already rooting for! :)Audio Thoughts: Narrated By Jim Frangione / Length: 10 hrs and 56 mins Jim's voice is sex on a stick! I love his male voices and his pacing is wonderful. It always takes me a minute to warm up to his female voices but once I do they flow really good too.Final Thoughts: I am looking forward to book 2!

So, I wasn't quite sure what to expect with this book, but if it was anything like her Guardians of Eternity series I thought it would be great. Well, not so much. It didn't seem like the same author wrote these books. This was choppy and the characters didn't quite feel fleshed out at first. I usually read a book in about a day to a day and a half, this took me about a week. I kept putting it down and reading a different book then pick this one back up. I'll probably read the next in the series just to make sure about this series, but honestly I'm not holding my breath for the next book like I do with the other series she writes. Thanks to Netgalley for the ARC.

The first book in the Sentinels series is an exciting and mesmerizing read.Hard bitten Kansas City cop Sergeant Duncan O’Connor enlists the help of a necro – one of the dead-channeling freaks from nearby Valhalla – when a beautiful erotic dancer is found murdered and the only clue is that she’s missing her heart. “High-Blood” Callie Brown senses a powerful presence in the mind of the dancer’s mind and realizes this was on ordinary homicide. With both their hearts and their lives on line, O’Connor and Callie‘s skills will be put to the test by a legendary necromancer who can control souls. This steady to fast paced plot engages the reader from the very beginning and keeps their attention to the end. The reader brings this intriguing story to life with vivid images, action, and bewitching characters that capture the imagination. The author uses well known as well as unique conflicts and drama to give the story lots of depth and ensures that the reader will want to know more. The action and battle scenes are well written and believable and make the reader feel as if they are right there and part of the story. The attraction between Callie and Duncan radiates heat from every page and the sex scenes rock the very foundations. The author brings the romance, passion and emotions to life with intense detail that makes easy to relate to the characters and understand their motivations. This fascinating and entertaining world captures the imagination with unique concepts, enchanting characters, endless possibilities and surprises that keep the reader guessing. I love Alexandra Ivy’s Guardian of Eternity series and I was looking forward to reading this one and while I must say it is totally different from the Guardians, it is just as mesmerizing and entertaining and I can’t wait for the next one.

I can't put my finger on why but I had a hard time getting through BORN IN BLOOD. I am sure typing out my review will make it clear to me. It was one of those books that you want to finish reading but you find yourself skipping over a few parts to get through it faster to find out what happens in the end. I found Duncan to be a little too pushy at times but he was suitably protective when needed and tolerant of those in Callie's life (except Fane of course). Callie comes off really fragile and quite but hides a strong woman underneath. The two work well together and make a believable couple. The secondary cast of characters seemed to be the ones who kept me reading though. The world building could have used more explanation and it felt like we were always being cut short on information that we needed to finish a scene. The villain of the story just annoyed the heck out of me. I skipped most of his dialog. By the end I didn't really feel like I was emotionally invested in the main characters. The events of the story did however bring out emotion in me so I am giving the story a little more star power because of that. I don't think I will go out of my way to pick up book 2 but I will look into who the main characters of the story will be in case that changes my mind. * This book was provided free of charge from the publisher in exchange for an honest review.
