About this audiobook

Fan favorite Etta Mae Wiggins takes center stage in the latest novel in the New York Times bestselling Miss Julia series. Bestselling author Ann B. Ross is back with another lively adventure set in Miss Julia's Abbotsville. For the first time, though, she writes from the perspective of another resident: the hardscrabble, heart-of-gold Etta Mae Wiggins. Etta Mae is frustrated with her trailer-park life and her no-good family, and she has big dreams for something better. Working as the home nurse for the elderly but wealthy Howard Connard, Senior, she finally sees her chance-with her sexy curves and infectious charm, Etta Mae is determined to become his wife. Unfortunately, Connard's scheming, money-hungry son and stuck-up daughter-in-law are equally determined to make sure she doesn't. To make matters worse, Etta Me's ex-husband Skip (her first ex, that is) has shown up with a winning lottery ticket in his hand and local thugs hot on his heels. Plus, her dreamy former flame, officer Bobby Lee, keeps popping up to remind her that she's not over him yet. In the middle of all this mayhem, Etta Mae has to get that marriage license-before it's too late! A hilarious wild goose chase that takes us from the mansions of Abbotsville to the trailer park that Etta Mae calls home, this book is filled with familiar faces (including Miss Julia, who narrates the first chapter), features Ann Ross's signature wit and southern charm, and will appeal to fans of the beloved series and newcomers alike.

Etta Mae Wiggins is a continuing character in the author’s Miss Julia books. Etta Mae’s Worst Bad-Luck Day is the author’s attempt to make her into the star of her own book. My question from the start was whether or not Etta Mae has the heft to carry the load. My answer is, “no.”Etta Mae is a survivor … just barely making ends meet but enjoying life as if she is the wealthiest woman in town. In Etta Mae’s Worst Bad-Luck Day, she is about to marry not the man of her dreams, but a wealthy old man who can take her above and beyond her financial and social status. Etta Mae is a home-care worker and Howard Connard, Sr. is one of her clients. He’s madly in love with her and wants her to become his wife, much to the chagrin of Howard, Jr. and his wife. The story revolves around Etta Mae’s attempts to get Howard “to the altar.”SPOILER ALERT. Because the story goes back in time in the Miss Julia series, fans of the series know that our heroine did not live as Mrs. Howard Connard in later books. So whatever happens in this book, we know Etta Mae’s life is not transformed. That spoiled it somewhat for me. I bought the book right after it came out in August 2014. I picked it up time after time, read a few chapters, then put it back on the stack and didn’t get back to it until weeks later. I finally finished it in late February. The Miss Julia books, on the other hand, I devour -- wishing I could slow down and savor them. Etta Mae’s Worst Bad-Luck Day is definitely NOT a compelling read. The best chapters are those in which Miss Julia makes an appearance, and fans of the series will relish those. And the Lucy-and-Ethel-ish quality – with nothing ever going as intended and Etta Mae’s hopes always being dashed, her plans thwarted -- was frustrating, not fun.

This review is for the book on compact disk.Etta Mae runs into roadblocks and sexual innuendoes as she tries to move up from the wrong side of the tracks. For twenty-four hours, her boss, ex-husband, former lover, and planned-to-be husband’s son meddle in Etta Mae’s plans. You need to listen to the story to decide whether this is a tale of true love or a gold digger’s path to riches. Despite the action, the characters are shallow and not fully developed. The quality of the recording and the reader is very good.

The Miss Julia series by Ann B. Ross is one I've always enjoyed. In this volume, the author serves up a previously ancillary character and makes her the star. In this audio version I received from LibraryThing's Early Reviewer program, the story rings clear, clean and very southern, but without the often insipid southern accent many readers find necessary to give the story authenticity.Etta Mae is introduced to us by Miss Julia who tries very hard not to appear prejudiced against this "poor girl" who hasn't had all the right opportunities that life can dish out. In fact, you can almost hear the phrase "poor white trash" bouncing through Miss Julia's head. Etta Mae is trying to better herself. To that end, she has become a certified home care provider and landed the plum job of caring for a very wealthy, but very sickly old gentlemen. Visions of sugarplums (and dollar signs) dance through Etta Mae's head as she sets out to capitalize on her patient's obvious obsession to marry her while outsmarting the gentleman's grown son and daughter-in-law who are intent upon stashing him in a sterile old age facility well out of the reaches of Etta Mae.The mad-cap shenanigans that befall all the players are almost over the top. At times I thought I was reading an episode of Three Stooges meets Green Acres. In the end, justice (of a sort) is done, and life goes on.This is a pleasant, if zany, read that will help while away a pleasant weekend in the upcoming winter.

Etta Mae’s Worst Bad Luck Day by Ann B. Ross is difficult to rate. For me it is a 3.5. This is the first book that I have ever read about a sweet, kind hearted gold digger. She says that all she really wants is the respect but I think the money helps. She hates that people think of her as loose and trailer trash”. She does live in a single wide and is very proud of her floral design sofa which is the highlight of her decor. When the story started, Etta Mae is a hard working woman who is lousy at picking husbands. She has “bettered” herself” by taking training as a nurse’s assistant. She works for Laurline’s Handy Helpers. That is how she met her fiancé, the notable and well moneyed Howard Connard, Senior. She was his handy helper and is still recovering from a stroke. The first part of this book seemed to go too slow so I was tempted to give up on it but I stuck it out and was rewarded by some belly laugh producing incidents in this book. There are a lot of stereotypes but the best part of the book is the humor. So if you decide to read it, just know that it gets better as the story goes along. Ann B. Ross is great at description and I could easily imagine all the characters and the “furnishings” in this book. I would like to read more of Ann B. Ross’s books.

Etta Maes Worst Bad Luck Day was a hoot that I enjoyed very much. Mine was the audio cd version and I thought it was very well done. It's a great way to read a book on a long trip without reading it. I'm looking to more of these.

Disclosure: I received this audio book as a reviewer for Library Thing in return for an honest review.Etta Mae's Worst Bad-Luck Day is a humorous story about a box-blonde from a trailer park in the south who has her sites set on marrying an old rich man before he dies. It has a lot of cliche humor and ditzy characters. If you are looking for a book that does not involve any thinking, then this is the right book for you. The plot is predictable and the characters are flat, but the story is silly and light hearted. The narration fit the character. The narrator had a smooth, even flow and perfected the ditzy southern accent that matched the description of Etta Mae. I tend to prefer books with more of an edge-of-your seat plot and characters with depth, so this one fell a bit flat for me. I also have not read the other books in the series. Overall, this novel was OK, but not memorable.

This is a departure for the Miss Julia series. Miss Julia appears only in the beginning introduction and in her contacts with Etta Mae Wiggins over a three day period. The story is all about Etta Mae and what happens when she sets out to marry one of her clients, a very elderly man, Mr. Harold Connard, Senior. She has people after her, or her ex-husband, Skip. She is bashed on the head, her trailer is trashed and Mr Connard, Junior and his wife hate her.I loved the entire story, Etta Mae is a dirt poor southern belle who works as a home health aid and is as kind and sweet as possible, that is, unless she is crossed, then she is a tiger protecting herself and those she cares about. The plot is actually a flashback to before Miss Julia accepted Etta Mae as a friend so it was fascinating to see it from Etta Mae's perspective.I will keep reading this series, it always is a lot of fun.

Etta Mae is an infamous character in Abbotsville lore, and in a slight departure from the time line presented in the Miss Julia series, we head back to a time when Etta Mae has yet to be Mrs. Springer's sidekick. As a home health care nurse, Etta Mae has befriended the very rich and elderly Mr. Howard Connard, Senior. With his seeming approval, and an ok from his housekeeper Emmett, it seems Etta Mae's luck will finally change when she gains the respectability she craves with this marriage. However, Etta Mae has a big heart, a lot of exes and we all know the road to true love rarely runs straight. This was a fun look at this world from a slightly different viewpoint.

I had not read any of Ann Ross' books previously so did not know what to expect. This is not the type of book I normally read but I enjoyed it immensely. It was a fun, light read. The writing was very descriptive and pulled me right into Etta Mae's little southern community. Wherever Etta Mae went there seemed to be trouble tagging along. Etta Mae has a huge heart and fortunately has some great friends. She certainly needed them.I received an advance, uncorrected copy of the book from Goodreads and the publisher.
