About this audiobook

Ten years ago, Perry fled her thrall contract to find sanctuary among the Nighthawks. In that time, she's become a respected woman of the Guard, and she's wanted Garrett Reed for as long as she can remember. But when a new case takes a chillingly familiar turn, Perry finds herself once again in the path of a madman-only this time, there's nowhere left to run.

Out of their depth and racing against time, Perry and Garrett must learn to trust the desire sparking between them or risk losing themselves forever to the darkness stalking London's streets.

I love the book itself, but hated the audio book. The narrator either hisses or screeches or snarls. I strongly caution you against listening to this book.

What a steamy steampunk romance! Perry is a flawed heroine, one whose flaws I understand. I understand the fear of the past, the fear that someone from your past will catch up to you and hurt those you love. I understand the power that fear has, that you may lock down emotionally, that you might do anything to keep those you love safe. Without understanding that, without being able to forgive someone for that, this book might not be all you hope for.The wickedness in this novel is stark, in-your-face evil. The intrepid duo of Perry and Garrett (who is suffering from his own insecurities) must meet and defeat both prongs of the evildoers. And in the meantime, they must make the transition from professional partners and friends to lovers, if the romance in the book is to come to fruition. As with all romances, the reader knows where the book will end; the joy is in the trip there. In some ways, this is an uncomfortable trip, but I enjoyed the book. I have already added the sequel (and final novel in the series) to my "to read" list.I strongly suggest reading the London Steampunk series in order so that your knowledge of the created world grows. For folks who have read the previous three novels, I think you will like this, provided the caveats in the first paragraph don't deter you.

I didn't care for this couple's previous book (and I'm still not sure why they got two). They finally have more than just a working relationship in this one, so that's one issue solved, but I still wasn't very impressed with them. We hear good things, but I feel like there isn't that much that backs them up. 'They would do anything for their partner', but then largely act selfishly, 'they trust their partner more than anyone', but then keep all these important things secret from them, they're supposed to be good detectives but they miss all sorts of things that are *right in front of them*. Also, the hero is fairly immature, and the heroine generally makes terrible decisions. And the ending felt more and more contrived as it went along. Eesh. I just didn't feel their relationship and I didn't enjoy their story. These two books are weak links in an otherwise creative and entertaining series.

I am sooooooooooooo into this series! I'll need to pick up hard copies for re-reads of all of them. I LOVED Perry and Garrett's story! I knew I would from the novella. One of my favorite kinds of heroine; a tomboy, a little insecure, a little traumatized, but tough as nails. On to the next - then I'll be caught up an have to wait for a new one! Who will it be?!

A respected member of the Nighthawks, Perry Lowell has worked hard for nine years to maintain a professional relationship with her partner, Garrett Reed. But when the bodies of two young girls are found with horrific injuries, the nightmares from Perry's past return to haunt her daylight hours, and she will have to confront the evil that she once managed to escape if she is to have a future with the man she loves.

    Oy!

The prequel novella to this installment, The Curious Case of the Clockwork Menace provides the intriguing background to Garrett and Perry's partnership and establishes the incredible chemistry that they share.

Unfortunately, it is all ultimately for naught as the captivating tension of their friends-to-lovers relationship devolves into something bland and lifeless.

Perry's most appealing traits in the previous books, i.e., her incredible self-confidence and her kick-ass personality, disappear completely, and she turns into a whiny little b*tch who runs at the first sign of trouble.

Similarly, Garrett goes from charming rake to ineffectual leader and lover in the blink of an eye. He suffers in comparison to the other alpha heroes in the series as he in never convincing as either the new master of the Nighthawks nor as Perry's knight in shining armor.

The Jack the Ripper type mystery has potential, but intertwining it with Perry's past undermines its efficacy as the focus shifts from the details of the case to Perry's personal issues, which fail to evoke any elements of tension or suspense. The villains are cookie-cutter caricatures and all that is missing are the twirling mustaches.

The intricate world building, minor developments in the ongoing Echelon dystopia storylines as well as the cameo appearances by previous couples are the book's only saving graces.

Hopefully the final installment will provide a more satisfying romance as well as a cohesive conclusion to story arc.

This was another very engaging and well done book in this series. This series is heavy on the romance but there was also a lot of mystery, paranormal, and steampunk elements in this book. I have really enjoyed the last two books in this series and am excited to read what sounds like is going to be the concluding book, Silk and Steam. This book follows the story of Perry and Garrett, two of the Nighthawks we meet in the previous book. Perry has been in love with Garrett for years and her actions in the last book definitely caught Garrett’s attention. Now rather than just being good friends Garrett is realizing that he might want more with Perry. However nothing is ever easy. When multiple cases of murdered debutantes come to light Perry realizes that a creepy figure from her past that she thought long dead might be stalking the streets again. On top of this Garrett has never fully recovered from his injuries in the last book and his craving virus levels are skyrocketing...driving him closer and closer to the Fade.As with all of these book the two main characters, Perry and Garrett, have wonderful chemistry together and are a pleasure to read about.Perry is incredibly tough as one of the few women vampires in the country, she also has a complicated history she has always kept hidden. We learn her history in this book as a series of murders bring everything back to haunt her.Garrett came off as rather jovial and light-hearted in the last book. However in this book we learn his past as well and it’s not pretty. He is also struggling and losing a battle with his rising CV levels. There are more steampunk elements in this book than in the first two books of the series. There is some about mechanical hearts and amazing inventions that could potentially help to fight the craving virus. There is also an excellent mystery as Garrett tries to unravel Perry’s secrets and as they both try to figure out who this mysterious murderer is.Overall this was a wonderfully engaging read. This is a wonderful mystery with steampunk elements that is heavy on the romance. The two main characters have excellent chemistry and are very engaging to read about. I would definitely recommend this book to fans of this series or fans of Kristen Callihan’s Darkest London series. I still think Meljean Brook’s Iron Seas series is a better steampunk romance series, the world-building in that series is just so spectacular. However, the London Steampunk series is also a very engaging read and well done, I would recommend to fans of steampunk with romance in it.

Reviewed by: Rabid Reads - 3.5 stars.I love this series for its Steampunk elements, swoon worthy romances, and Bec McMaster’s beautiful writing style. I know that tears are forthcoming every time I pick-up a new installment because this author has a real knack for making me feel invested in the characters, and for tugging at my heartstrings. FORGED BY DESIRE was an enjoyable read, albeit not my favourite LONDON STEAMPUNK novel because of its rather uneventful first half; the story felt like it was divided into two parts instead of being one cohesive story.Up to this point, readers haven’t gotten to spend much time with Garrett and Perry, so a large portion of this installment was dedicated to developing their characters, and on growing their relationship. Now, that’s pretty standard procedure in Paranormal Romance, but in this instance it didn’t really work for me; the unrequited love grew tiring after a while as did all of the secrets. I probably wouldn’t have butted heads with these elements nearly as much as I did had they been woven into the main story arc instead of having had to trudge through chapters and chapters of angst in order to get to the point. Once the main plot kicked in, I quickly remembered why I adore this series, but unfortunately it just took a heck of a long time to get there.I liked the political intrigue that the Echelon brought to this tale with dukes, and even the prince consort himself involved, things were sure to get interesting. The murder mystery starts out small, but as things progressed it became apparent that there were larger schemes in play, and that things weren’t quite what they seemed. By the end of this book, I felt like this series’ main story arc was on the verge of being resolved. I have no idea how many installments are planned or whether the author is going to simply take LONDON STEAMPUNK in a new direction, but regardless I can tell you this—OF SILK AND STEAM will be a must read! March 2015, mark your calendars.Perry’s character was a bit problematic for me; I didn’t exactly dislike her per say, she just wasn’t overly memorable either. Her Nighthawks persona didn’t jive with her past, and I had difficulty making the switch from heroine to victim. Garrett on the other hand was absolutely brilliant! I loved when his Blue blood half reared its primal head, and Reed’s borderline obsession to Miss Lowell was charming—tracking beacon and all! I enjoyed the slow burn romance, although I wish that they would have A) gotten it on sooner or B) been better incorporated into the plot line. Lynch & Rosalind, the characters from book 3, played pretty significant roles in this novel, and the rest of the LONDON STEAMPUNK cast also make brief cameos. The whole gang together at last!Bec McMaster delivered another Steampunk-erific installment with FORGED BY DESIRE!
