- Rating: 3 out of 5 stars3/5Murder on Wheels by Lynn Cahoon is the sixth book in the Tourist Trap Mystery series. Jill Gardner is the owner of CBM (Coffee, Books, and More) in South Cove, California. Jill and her boyfriend, Greg King are on their monthly double date with Amy Newman (friend and city planner) and her boyfriend, Justin Cross (history professor). They decided to go to a geocaching event. Their they meet Kacey Austin, president of Coastal Geocache Club. She is also the wife of Dustin Austin, owner of Austin’s Bike Shop (he is also the awful man who dumped Jill’s friend, Sadie Michaels). Then Jill finds out that Kacey using the food truck (that Jill wanted to buy) and opening Good For You Desserts (gluten-free desserts). Kacey has a severe wheat allergy (she has Celiac’s disease). This will certainly not help business at Jill’s coffee shop (especially since they do not offer gluten-free alternatives). Then a body in found on the beach. Kacey Austin is dead. Who would have wanted to kill this sweet young woman? Greg tells Jill to stay out of it, but you know Jill cannot help herself. She just has to investigate. Will Jill be able to find out who killed Kacey (and keep Greg from finding out that she is at it again)?Murder on Wheels was a disappointment. It was more like a soap opera than a cozy mystery novel. There seemed to be a lot of focus on the love lives and friendships of the characters (examples are: Aunt Jackie dating Harrold Snider from Train Station which put Josh Thomas’ nose out of joint; Toby and Elisa breaking up; Sasha has a crush on Toby; Amy is mad at Jill because she would not report on her neighbor’s water usage; Sadie upset about Austin breaking up with her). We also got a lot of information about food (they seemed to constantly be eating). I wanted more mystery (a few clues). The mystery was extremely simple to solve (it was just so obvious), but readers like to follow the clues to the conclusion (arrest of the killer). Murder on Wheels cannot be read as a stand-alone book (I have read all the books in the series). You really do need to read the other books in the series in order to understand everything that is happening in Murder on Wheels (the relationships, characters, etc.). I give Murder on Wheels 3 out of 5 stars. I just felt the book was too superficial. I like reading mysteries for the mystery. The mystery seemed to take a back seat in Murder on Wheels to romance and food.I received a complimentary copy of Murder on Wheels from NetGalley in exchange for an honest review.
- Rating: 4 out of 5 stars4/5A special thank you to Kensington and NetGalley for an ARC in exchange for an honest review. Lynn Cahoon returns with another cozy and witty mystery--#6 Tourist Trap Mystery MURDER ON WHEELS, with a new business “Good for You Desserts” --a gluten-free dessert truck. A hippie mobile like look from the seventies, turns deadly. An array of eccentric small town characters, a scavenger hunt, and a whodunit cozy murder mystery, keeping fans coming back for more. True to form, the supporting characters in Lynn’s cozy mysteries are often very broadly drawn and used as comic relief. In this long-running humorous cozy mystery series, Jill is at the center as the witty feisty sleuth, with the hot detective boyfriend Greg—trouble seems to follow her, like Janet Evanovich’s Stephanie Plum. I guess aunt Jackie is Jill's side kick, as Lula's is Stephanie's partner in crime, and Jill's hottie is Greg like Plum's cop boyfriend, Joe Morelli. Now, all we need is a Grandma Mazur, to complete the cast. Similar to Evanovich's Plum Series, you gotta keep reading Cahoon's Tourist Trap Mysteries--compulsively addictive! As the book opens, Jill Gardner, and boyfriend/detective hunk, Greg King, along with friends, Justin and Amy are on a big scavenger hunt. Justin had talked them into a new activity for their monthly double date. Geocaching. They go out into the woods, hide an object, and then post the GPS coordinates with a list of clues for others to find the item. Then apparently you post on the website that you “found” the spot (without spoilers), take something from the cache, and leave something for the next explorer. Jill Gardner, bookstore and coffee shop owner is now a mad geocacher, as part of The Coastal Geocache Club. Some even homeschooler families use the hobby to teach geography principles. Austin’s (Austin’s Bike Shop) latest love is the computer guru Kacey, and they are opening a dessert truck (all gluten-free) due to her food allergies. Jill likes to get the inside scoop from Greg, and now it appears someone has vandalized the food truck and trashed the insides and has stolen all her recipes. The only woman who would want Kacey’s recipes was the woman from whom they were stolen originally. It couldn’t be Sadie? Now worse, Kacey has been murdered.Guess who is on the case? Unofficially, of course. From adorable golden retriever, Emma, some chocolate delights, and of course the continued warnings from Greg to Jill to stay out of the investigation (she has already started her own murder investigation notebook, before he gets the words out of his mouth), and the rest of the South Cove gang, with a little breaking and entering and some sleuthing…Never a dull moment. Always trouble brewing. Jill needs to hang out her PI license in addition to the coffee/book store. A proper "Sleuth" needs to be intelligent, witty, and always a few steps ahead others. Jill is all of the above. The detectives in cozy mysteries, such as Tourist Trap, are left free to eavesdrop, gather clues, and use their intuitive "feel" for the social dynamics of the community to solve the crime. Having read all six books in the series, each can be read as a standalone; however, in order to keep up with the characters and their history-- much more fun to start from the beginning and add to the collection.A sneak preview at the previous five mysteries, for a little more temptation. BTW a new store opening across the street next to The Glass Slipper—a china shop Teattee. #7 Tea Cups and Carnage (Available June 7, 2016). Who will be murdered next?
- Rating: 4 out of 5 stars4/5Jill Gardner owns Coffee, Books and More in a small tourist town in California. She is dating the Police Chief, Greg and is quite happy with her life. When she and Greg go geocaching on a double date, they meet Kacey, the president of the club and wife of Dustin Austin, the man who recently jilted Jill's friend Sadie when he reconciled with Kacey. When Kacey is found dead on the beach, Greg arrests Austin for the crime. Jill is sure he is innocent and begins her own investigation. She asks questions and is able to find leads that escaped Greg. Can they figure out who the murderer is?
Will Jill put herself in danger?
I love the characters in this series. They are so real. Jill works hard, eats whatever she wants, runs for exercise, has a wonderful dog named Emma, reads as often as she can, loves movies, picnics on the beach and is smart and a loyal friend. She could be a neighbour or BFF. Greg is kind, understanding, smart and loves Jill very much. The staff at the store work well together and care about each other. The other characters in town range from eccentric to grandmotherly. All in all, a great cast of characters. The plot moved quickly and had great pacing. There was mystery, romance, some female drama and some fun. A great story even though I had figured out the murderer before the end. I will definitely continue reading this series and I recommend it to all cozy mystery lovers. The publisher generously provided me with a copy of this book via Netgalley. - Rating: 5 out of 5 stars5/5While I usually look for good world building in fantasy or sci fi, I find it hits the sweet spot here. Jill Gardner comments on it in this book and I realized that it's so true, that I absolutely love returning to South Cove because the world Cahoon has created is so fantastic. Jill and her boyfriend Greg are trying their hand at a new hobby, geocaching. Several new characters are introduced, but it's when Jill's friend Sadie is under suspicion for a local murder that Jill's natural nosiness kicks in. The murder plot really kept me guessing, the 'body' seemed like such a nice character, it was hard to guess right away who might have done it. And I liked the added reality of the a subplot about how the tourist town is handling the California drought.
- Rating: 4 out of 5 stars4/5Jill's life seems to be settling down, and as the book opens Jill along with her boyfriend Greg are on a geocaching adventure. Jill meets the club president Kacey and finds out that she is opening a new business in a food truck and she will be serving gluten free treats. Then she finds that Kacey is the wife of her friend Sadie Mathews' ex-boyfriend, Austin. Since Sadie is a baker and Austin pilfered several of her recipes, Jill is figuring that Sadie's recipes have end up in Kacey's hands. When Kacey is found dead, Jill is concerned that the authorities will believe that Sadie has a serious motive and starts her behind the scenes investigation to make sure that the right person is arrested.I love this series because the characters are lively and the setting is fun. Looking forward to the next in the series when it comes out later this year.
