About this audiobook
Jacob Beaufort's spirit has been unable to crossover since his death. It might have something to do with the fact he was murdered. Or it might not. All he knows is, he has been assigned by the Otherworld's administrators to a girl named Emily. A girl who can see and touch him. A girl who released a shape-shifting demon into the mortal realm. Together they must send the demon back before it wreaks havoc on London. It should be a simple assignment, but they soon learn there's nothing simple when a live girl and a dead boy fall in love.

- Rating: 4 out of 5 stars4/5I was pulled into this story from the start. I enjoyed the relationship between Jacob and Emily very much. The angst of falling in love with a ghost was well written and I find myself pulling for some miracle that explains why Jacob is 'different' from other ghosts (and perhaps gives the couple a future with the living). This was an exciting adventure with just enough danger. I look forward to the next book in the series.
- Rating: 3 out of 5 stars3/5I like the subject and the characters … it flowed well . The romance part was a bit juvenile and predictable. Could have been 5 stars with a little more fleshing out of characters and less “oh she’s so amazing “
And “he is so gorgeous “ silliness - Rating: 3 out of 5 stars3/5Series Info/Source: This is the first book in the Emily Chambers trilogy. I borrowed this audiobook through Audible Escapes.Story (3/5): This is a pretty typical supernatural historical fantasy. It’s set in London and ghosts and demons are real. I would have liked to learn more about the demons and ghosts and how that all works; but the ghosts we actually get to read about are few and far between and the demon we only see briefly. I did enjoy the mystery behind who enabled the summoning of a shapeshifting demon. Characters (3/5): The characters all felt a bit vanilla to me, but Jacob and Emily do have good chemistry together. While Emily does occasionally show some pluck, she really lets her sister dominate her most of the time. Setting (3/5): There wasn’t a lot of work done in world-building here. The setting is pretty typical historical Victorian with some small supernatural elements added. Writing Style (3/5): The whole thing felt a bit limp and lackluster to me. I felt the same way about Archer’s Glass and Steele series, but decided to give her another chance since this was free to borrow though Audible Escapes. Archer is almost an author I like but I just don’t quite engage with her style. Summary (3/5): This was an okay book but didn’t really excel at anything. Everything was okay but nothing really grabbed me. I felt the same way about Archer’s Glass and Steele series. I don’t plan on continuing the series.
- Rating: 5 out of 5 stars5/5The MediumEmily Chambers Spirit Medium Series, Book 1By: C. J. ArcherNarrated by: Gemma DawsonThis was a great mystery, ghost story, romance, and more! Our gal of the story is a medium in a time when mediums were everywhere and they finding out they were frauds. But our gal is real. As a teen, with only her older sister, they make a living helping people. One day a handsome man comes as a warning, a demon has be set free due to something her sister said while holding a cursed necklace. Of course they didn't know. The young man is a ghost and only she can see him. He is assigned to help with the problem. He is just about her age and died recently but doesn't know how. A wonderful story and so many mysteries to solve. A love story that rips your heart out. So good! The narrator is so good! The perfect light touch for a ghost story! Loved it all!
- Rating: 4 out of 5 stars4/5This was a freebie from Amazon. I found myself enjoying this book. I have a fascination with ghosts and whether or not people can really communicate with them. Medium is the introduction of Emily Chambers. She is a spirit medium. She holds seances and can see and speak to ghosts. She has a ghost assigned to her because of a demon that was released during one of her seances. Her sister did it accidentally. The ghost assigned to Emily is Jacob. The interaction of those two was what kept me interested.I also enjoyed Emily's sister Celia. She actually asked Emily is ghosts can have intimacy. Celia knows Emily is falling in love with Jacob and she is concerned about Emily's virtue. This maybe the first time I actually buy the next book of a freebie.
- Rating: 4 out of 5 stars4/5Got this one as a freebie, and the premise caught my attention so I tried it out and turns out it was kind of fabulous.
- Rating: 5 out of 5 stars5/5i love it... really fun...
- Rating: 5 out of 5 stars5/5Opening Paragraph TeaserWhoever said dead men don't tell lies had never met Barnaby Wiggam's ghost. The fat, bulbous-nosed spirit fading in and out beside me like a faulty gas lamp clearly thought he was dealing with a fool. I may only be seventeen but I'm not naïve. I know when someone is lying—being dead didn't alter the tell-tale signs. Mr. Wiggam didn't quite meet my eyes, or those of his widow and her guests—none of whom could see him anyway—and he fidgeted with his crisp white silk necktie as if it strangled him. It hadn't—he'd died of an apoplexy.Review Emily Chambers is a 17 year old medium living with her older sister after her mother has passed away. Emily doesn't know who her father is because he passed a way a whole year before she was born and no one else knows who her father is either. Emily and her sister make a living by holding seances because Emily can speak to the dead. She is very good at helping the dead move on from the waiting room where they go when they die. However not everyone wants to move on they decide to stay and haunt people as well but she does her best. Accidentally Emily and her sister Celia release a shape shifting demon into the moral world where it starts to kill to feed. A handsome ghost Jacob Beaufort show's up at her door, he was sent by the Otherworld's administrators to help Emily track down the Shape shifting demon before it can wreak havok on the city of London. The closer the pair get the more they find themselves falling in love. I won this book off of Librarythings in a giveaway and I'm very glad I did because it introduced me to C.J. Archer as a writer. I love Emily she's different but she uses it to her advantage, she's a strong character who takes matters into her own hands. I love the relationship between Emily and Jacob, they have such great chemistry plus it's kinda fitting that a medium would be in love with a ghost. I feel the characters are very well written you can easily connect with them. I really enjoyed the mystery aspects it kept me guessing and I love the twists and turns that go along with a good mystery. Their are a few humors spots that involve the Wiggams that had me giggling which I found refreshing. I had a hard time putting this one down, I even skipped going to the movies last night because I wanted to know what was going to happen, and I can't wait for the next one in the series. This book introduced me to C.J. Archer but I found her writing entertaining and captivating, and I will be checking out her other books because this one was so great.
- Rating: 5 out of 5 stars5/5A paranormal romance in a Victorian Setting. If you like Jayne Ann Krentz (Jayne Castle), you will like this book - while the author does not imitate Krentz's rather formulaic style, the period setting and focus on relationships works very well. Two single sisters are trying to make it in England, in a time where mediums are the craze and charlatans abound.' Single women must be careful to protect their reputations while crossing the private/public line and working for pay. Possibilities for romance do exist, but can they be fulfilled? I do not want to give any spoilers here, but I really enjoyed this book: the narrative flowed nicely, and in contrast to many self-published works it read well. If you like the genre, or know anyone who does, this book is highly recommended.
- Rating: 5 out of 5 stars5/5A book worth every one of the 5 stars! I do not normally read period novels but I have now fallen in love. The author amerces you directly in the story with no pomp and circumstance allowing the story, characters, and descriptions to speak for themselves and carry you away with them. Not only does it have the normal love with seemingly insurmountable obstacles, but mystery and faced paced action. The characters are believable and appropriate for the period and the author has captured the culture and attitudes of London in the 1880's. The story was fast paced but with enough meat to the writing that it flows smoothly. It also answers one of my long time questions about ghosts. How can ghosts move objects but not people? This has made my list of books read in one night (just because I couldn't bear to put it down).
