It seems like this book missed out on proofing. The timeline doesn’t flow and the brothers don’t age. Other sharp contrast of events like her mother giving her a party right after locking her up, make the whole book seem like an over dramatized take on reality. Being the victim of a bipolar narcissistic mother, I have lived through every situation in this book. They’re all text book abusive mothers. And grandmothers.

The narration made this much better. I prefer narrators to use emphases on their words, instead of mono-tone boring readings. This was just like my mom as well so it is very relatable.

I absolutely recommend reading! This book was such an easy book to get in to. The author does an extraordinary job at retelling moments in her dysfunctional family and life in a way that allows you to see clearly like a memory. And the way her life unfolds into something so beautiful and strong, regardless of her horrible experiences with a very warped family dynamic, is inspiring. It is so relatable in many ways and I discovered more insight into my own life experiences.

Very touching listen. My mother has borderline so I found it very cathartic. The tragic bits are balanced nicely with sweet coming of age moments and Beth is so endearing.

I really wanted to listen to this audiobook… And I just can’t get past the ridiculous voices. I even fast forwarded it….. to no avail :(
I agree with a previous reviewer when she said, “what am I , five?” Sorry, just not the right narrator for me.

I tried so hard to stay in this book, but this girl and her mother were just too much! I can’t believe that someone like her mom could be so absolutely evil to this girl and she asked for help from no one! She would have let her die! And this girl doesn’t call her dad or her grandma?! And the step dad knows what’s going on and helps the mom? When he cares about the daughter? Then the girl turns over her savings to this woman when she kicks her out?! I had had enough right then! If this is all true? This girl had to start taking responsibility at some point instead of always being a complete and helpless victim! It’s nauseating!

I listened to the recorded version. This seems to be written well although disjointed as the chapters seem to leap from one time period to another without a smooth transition, but I did not enjoy the voices that the reader tried to use to make the reading more dramatic. She would voice a giggle, then read out loud "I giggled" which seemed unnecessary, I know she is the author and not a professional reader but it was annoying, She could have just read it, but instead she tried to make her voice sound like a little child and then switched to attempting to imitate a male voice but I found this very distracting. I especially found the repeated mispronunciation of parents' and grandparents' as "Granparentses", "parentses" etc., and "periphial" instead of "peripheral" very irritating. Maybe those are midwest regional pronunciations but it bothered my ears. Her mother's voice was probably on track but the other voices bothered me. Her mother was clearly an abusive bitch but I also found her narration a bit whiny and hard to listen to. I am not finished with the book and am waiting to hear about her leaving this environment but it is tough.

The author needs to grow a backbone. Many times I nearly quit because of her
Meekness and cowardly behaviour, I did finish it, but do not recommend it. Sorry.

I feel badly articulating this, as I’m certain that narrating her own work has been part of Beth’s emotional journey- but the narration is painful. The voices are a deterrent. There are times (at least once) when the editing is bad and a sentence is repeated. The recording quality is marginal at best and sounds as if it has been done from underwater at times.

That said- I made it through the entire book. It was just interesting enough to keep me going despite all of that.
