Description

The #1 New York Times bestselling author of A Man Called Ove and Beartown delivers an insightful and poignant tale about finding out what is truly important in life.

It all begins with a father telling a story to his son on Christmas Eve. But this isn't your typical Christmas story. The father admits to his son that he's taken a life but he won't say whose-not yet.

One week earlier, in a hospital late at night, the man met a five-year-old girl with cancer. She's a smart kid-smart enough to know that she won't beat cancer by drawing with crayons all day, but it seems to make the adults happy, so she keeps doing it.

As the man tells his son about this plucky little girl, he slowly reveals more about himself: while he may be a successful businessman, idolized by the media and his peers, he knows he failed as a parent. Overwhelmed by the responsibility of fatherhood, he took the easy way out and left his wife and little boy twenty years ago to pursue professional success. Now he is left wondering if it's too late to forge a relationship with his son, who seems to be his opposite in every way-prizing happiness over money, surrounded by loving friends in a cozy town where he feels right at home.

Face to face with the idea that something is missing, the man is given the unexpected chance to do something selfless that could change the destiny of the little girl in the hospital bed. But before he can make the deal of a lifetime, he needs to find out what his own life has actually been worth in the eyes of his son. And so, he seeks him out and tells him this story…

Written with Fredrik Backman's signature humor, compassion, and "knack for weaving tales that are believable and fanciful" (St. Louis Post-Dispatch), The Deal of a Lifetime reminds us that life is a fleeting gift, and our only legacy is how we share that gift with those we love.

WOW. The depth of love, only a parent can understand.
  • (5/5)
The story and how it was written. Short, sad and sweet.

A cute little story, was very tropey at first for this genre (inspirational short story about profundity of life), but then had some unique spins on that model.

This author is wonderful. I love love all his books. Thanks so much for writing. Jo Ann

I LOVED that short story! Really, it's less than an hour long but still..the characters are alive.. I felt sucked into the story, and it was moving.. how can such a short novella be moving??? This was my first encounter with Backman and won't be my last! I'm not a big fan of short stories, I picked that one because it's nearly Christmas but it's not really a Christmas story except maybe for some reminders of Dickens.. but it's something to read with your heart, so still ok for that festive time.. and also very very well written! A big thank-you to the author for that little treasure!

... cos at the end it remains only one question “ it was loved?”

It was moving for being a short story. I am glad I took the time to listen to it

Deep and rewarding short listen/read. Thought provoking and sweet. Read it

Brief and beautiful. So touching beyond words. Loved every bit of it.

Do you know Backnan for Beartown and A man called Ove, two books which are rooted in reality and the stories of ordinary working people. This book is more twilight zone. He throws out some surprising possibilities about angels and death. And he writes with almost the same sense of humor that he brings to his other books. A year ago I would have given this four stars, but I have become more liberal in my old age and I’m giving this five, because I really can’t see anything wrong with the book to downgrade it.

This was a short and beautifully written story. Very emotional.

Short and thought provoking, great to listen to while cleaning

I would not doubt this book was written by Bachman. It is a character study of such depth. You have given me hours and hours of lovely reading. But more valuable are the hours of contemplation following your books, exploring what I just read. You are an artist of words, Mr. Bachman.

A short and enjoyable novela perfect for the Christmas season.

So sweet, but too short. It's hopeful, bittersweet, and moving, and the writing makes me want to read Backman's novels.
  • (5/5)
Frederick Backman is an amazing story teller. This simple, heartfelt story is wonderful.
