About this audiobook

#1 New York Times bestselling author Diana Gabaldon has captivated millions of readers with her critically acclaimed Outlander novels, the inspiration for the Starz original series. From the moment Claire Randall stepped through a standing stone circle and was thrown back in time to the year 1743-and into a world that threatens life, limb, loyalty, heart, soul, and everything else Claire has-readers have been hungry to know everything about this world and its inhabitants, particularly a Scottish soldier named Jamie Fraser. In this beautifully illustrated compendium of all things Outlandish, Gabaldon covers the first four novels of the main series, including: - full synopses of Outlander, Dragonfly in Amber, Voyager, and Drums of Autumn - a complete listing of the characters (fictional and historical) in the first four novels in the series, as well as family trees and genealogical notes - a comprehensive glossary and pronunciation guide to Gaelic terms and usage - The Gabaldon Theory of Time Travel, explained - frequently asked questions to the author and her (sometimes surprising) answers - an annotated bibliography - essays about medicine and magic in the eighteenth century, researching historical fiction, creating characters, and more - professionally cast horoscopes for Jamie and Claire - the making of the TV series: how we got there from here, and what happened next (including "My Brief Career as a TV Actor") - behind-the-scenes photos from the Outlander TV series set For anyone who wants to spend more time with the Outlander characters and the world they inhabit, Diana Gabaldon here opens a door through the standing stones and offers a guided tour of what lies within.

I have read and re-read the books. This companion is a necessity for Jamie and Claire fans!

Although dated (it was published 15 years ago and only covers the first four books in the Outlander series), I enjoyed flipping through the summaries, list of characters, chapter on Gaelic, and bibliography. Most interesting to me, however, were the chapters on her inspirations, how she wrote and published the books, the differences between the US and UK versions, and especially the chapter on controversies, i.e. feedback she has gotten from readers on her use of swear words, sex, homosexuality, and the spanking scene. Fascinating!

Super brief - this is a handy reference to have around regardless of how often one has read this series. It helps keep things in chronological order, keep the relationships in a manageable format (including showing any changes). Certainly not to be considered light reading, this is much closer to research material than to a fictional novel (series). And then there is the fact that this only goes so far into the series, having been written well before serval of the latter portion of the series. But nonetheless it is useful, not to mention full of fascinating information.

Wow, this book is stuffed with information. If I had read it earlier in the series, I would have been giddy over the insights. Most of the insights, however, are revealed in the latter books. Still, Gabaldon is remarkable and this book is no exception.

This is a must read for all fans of the "Outlander" series. This book is an encyclopedia of the first few books, answering many questions that arise. I learned more about Jamie and Claire and the entire series thanks to this book.

For those of you that have read the Outlander series but need to know more this book is for you. The Companion gives background information about the times, places, people, etc. It is a must to have around especially during a reread.

This one book attempts to give a synopsis of sorts to the rest of the books in the series and some author inside tidbits complete with a fan's star chart for the 2 main characters. It was OK but I ended up skimming for something I didn't know after reading the series.

Perhaps you have to be a hardcore fan to really appreciate this tome. I did find some of the information interesting, but just skimmed the majority of the book. Part of the problem for me is that I've actually seen and met Gabaldon so I already knew much of this information. Also, it only covers part of the series, so now some of it is null and void. It was really great of her to put this together. If you really want to get into her mind, this is the book for you. I think she should have waiting until she was done with the entire series before putting something like this out. However, if you are just like to read her books but aren't a hardcore Outlander fan, this book is really not for you.
