About this audiobook
Learning of a horrifying family crime from his grandfather, journalist Ezra Stevenson tries to verify the story by tracking down four brothers and sisters, alleged victims of abuse. "Full of death and suffering, the novel exhilarates rather than depresses, its stark dourness vivifying rather than dulling the reading appetite," concluded PW. - Rating: 4 out of 5 stars4/5If you've read McCormack's short story collection, Inspecting the Vaults, some of this will seem familiar to you. This is my second McCormack book, and the parallels between the two are deliberate and mysterious. For instance, a "novel" published by a character in this book has episodes corresponding to the stories in Inspecting the Vaults. The central story in The Paradise Motel, the fate of the four McKenzie siblings, who were the featured subjects of a gruesome tale told on a Patagonian expedition in Inspecting the Vaults, is the unifying them of this "novel"--which is more like a series of interconnected short stories, with various fascinating digressions. McCormack has quite an imagination, by turns gruesome, mysterious, and downright hilarious. I won't give away anything here. While I didn't find it as satisfying as Inspecting the Vaults, I liked it a lot--and the ending can be mused over for some time. McCormack is a very distinctive writer. The audiobook narration by James Gillies is also excellent.
