Reese Witherspoon pick…

“The Scent Keeper” was the Reese Witherspoon x Hello Sunshine Book Club pick for February 2020. On the club’s official website, Witherspoon wrote, “This magical story is about a young woman, Emmaline, confronting the modern world for the very first time. As she embarks on a journey of digging up her past, she is confronted with truth about love, family, and who she really is.”

Description

Erica Bauermeister, the national best-selling author of The School of Essential Ingredients, presents a moving and evocative coming-of-age audiobook about childhood stories, families lost and found, and how a fragrance conjures memories capable of shaping the course of our lives.

Emmeline lives an enchanted childhood on a remote island with her father, who teaches her about the natural world through her senses. What he won’t explain are the mysterious scents stored in the drawers that line the walls of their cabin, or the origin of the machine that creates them. As Emmeline grows, however, so too does her curiosity, until one day the unforeseen happens, and Emmeline is vaulted out into the real world — a place of love, betrayal, ambition, and revenge. To understand her past, Emmeline must unlock the clues to her identity, a quest that challenges the limits of her heart and imagination.

Lyrical and immersive, The Scent Keeper explores the provocative beauty of scent, the way it can reveal hidden truths, lead us to the person we seek, and even help us find our way back home.

This story is probably more suited to young adults but I nevertheless enjoyed it. A tale of a girl who comes of age, a slow first part but beautifully written, reminiscent of Where the Crawdads Sing.

A lovely story beautifully presented, well worth reading/listening to! Easy.

Not one of my favorites. Started out slow and never picked up.

Wonderful story about smalls and what each means to us. A story of a girl growing up and maturing as she finds out who she is

Sus descripciones me abrieron a otro mundo, uno que no conocía

This was a beautifully written novel, very different from anything I’ve listened to before . It made me more aware of my surroundings …unusual ,refreshing and thought provoking. The narration was wonderful ??

Reminded me of Where the Crawdads Sing, but with more happiness and a better ending.

A beautifully crafted homage to scent, memories and belonging - and the interplay between them!

Nice one. Introduces you to the world of scent. Well balanced in terms of nature of the world we are introduced to. At first a touch of fairy tale and sudden twists of harsh reality ending up with a nice blend of both for perfect understanding. Recommended for you to listen.

The concept of a scent recorder (like a Polaroid that takes a scent picture) is compelling. I struggled at first to get into the novel but I ended up loving it.
  • (3/5)
Though I believe it lacked depth of plot development, especially in the first 20 chapters, it was plentiful with descriptive language that made characters and scents come alive.

Not what I thought it would be wrt scents but still a very interesting read.
I thought it would be more about the benefits of various oils, like essential oils, but it was more about memories and soul and depth of scents.

Part 1 seemed to drag on too long. Once I wanted to know what happened, the end felt very incomplete with too many questions. Also I did not like the audio narrator. I won’t read it again but it’s worth at least reading once. The detail is unique and the concept is interesting.
